Kashaia Cannon and Jamie Conroy each had 17 points while Brittany Wilson added 16 as a second half rally came up short as Northeastern fell to Boston University 83-78 at Case Gym on Wednesday night. Caitlynn Moran led BU with 24 points.
The teams traded buckets early in the contest as the lead changed eight times. Boston University took the lead for good on a Moran three-pointer to make the score 18-16 at 12:21, which triggered an 11-1 run over 4:04. A layup by Wilson would cut the margin to four points, but Moran responded with two-straight baskets as BU cruised, out scoring Northeastern 25-6 to take a 50-27 lead at the half.
Moran had 16 points in the first half as the Terriers shot 51.5 percent in the first. Northeastern was led by Conroy with 10 points while shooting 35.3 percent from the floor.
The Huskies scored the first four points of the second half, prompting a BU timeout just 46 seconds in. A 13-4 run over 4:35 put the Huskies down 14, but a three-pointer from Ashley Young would give BU a 17 point lead. Rachael Pecota hit the Huskies first three of the game to cut the margin to 12, yet Moran continued to hound the Huskies as she hit a jumper in the lane and nailed a three to give BU a 62-45 advantage.
Northeastern would not be deterred as Kendra Walton scored two critical three-pointers sparking a 16-7 run by the Huskies to put them down eight with 4:41 remaining. A Huskies turnover with the score at 70-63 led to BU's Chantell Alford converting a three-point play. Northeastern responded with an old-fashioned three as Cannon was able to complete the play seven seconds later. With 2:59 remaining, Cannon nailed a three to cut what was once a lead 23 point lead to four at 75-71. BU's Ashley Young hit a three with 1:25 left and Northeastern immediately replied, riding Cannon's hot hand has she hit a three 25 second later to keep the deficit at four.
A Conroy basket at put Northeastern down 82-78, but Moran would hit the first of two free throws to give the Terriers an 83-78 win.
Cannon's 17 points were all scored in the second half. Kendra Walton added 13, 10 of which came in the second. Northeastern shot 53.1 percent in the second half while holding the Terriers to 32.3 percent. The Huskies out rebounded the Terriers 42-37.
Northeastern returns to action on Saturday, November 28 taking on Army at Matthews Arena.
