De'Shena Stevens led three players in double figures as St. John's defeated Northeastern 69-53 at Solomon Court on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Storm shot 40.4 percent for the game and held the Huskies to just 29.7 percent from the floor. Northeastern was led by
Kashaia Cannon, who came off the bench to score 13 points, all in the first half, while
Rachael Pecota added 11 for Northeastern, who fall to 5-6 on the season.
St. John's never trailed in the game and would lead by as many as 23. The Red Storm started the game on a 9-0 run over the first 2:12 of the game and would stretch the lead all the way out to 22 in the first half while never letting the Huskies get to within less than eight points to take a 43-24 lead at halftime. The Huskies bench performed well, scoring 22 of the team's 24 first half points. Cannon's 13 led the way for Northeastern while
Mia Mayberry gave the Huskies a needed boost, scoring six points and grabbing four rebounds on her way to setting career-highs in points and rebounds, finishing with eight points and six rebounds. Pecota hit a three off the bench, while
Jamie Conroy was the only starter to make it in the scoring column.
Stevens and Nadirah McKenith each had 11 first half points for St. John's as the Red Storm shot 48.4 percent from the floor.
The Huskies opened the second half hitting their shots, going 4-for-6 to open the frame and cutting the deficit to 14. It was as close as Northeastern would get, as the Red Storm held Northeastern without a basket for 6:05 and used a 9-0 run to give St. John's its largest lead of the game with 11:50 remaining. The Huskies would pull to within 14 again at the 4:08 mark, but St. John's scored the next six points to put Northeastern out of striking distance.
Stevens' 21 points led all scorers while McKenith added 15 and Shenneika Smith rounded out the scoring for St. John's with 13 points. Joy McCorvey added 12 rebounds for the Red Storm, who improve to 12-1 on the season.
Conroy finished with eight points, while
Kendra Walton added eight rebounds.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, January 3, taking on VCU in the conference opener at 2 p.m.
