Huskies down Holy Cross 89-82 in 2 OT

Brittany Wilson scored a career-high 31 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line and nine rebounds leading five Huskies in double figures as Northeastern defeated Holy Cross 89-82 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. The win gives Northeastern its best start since the 1998-99 season.

The two teams traded three-pointers in the opening minutes of the game as Wilson hit two for the Huskies while Holy Cross responded with two of its own to have four three-pointers made in the first three minutes of the game.

Wilson and Jamie Conroy each hit a pair of lay ups to give the Huskies a 10-6 lead at the first media timeout. Wilson had eight points to open the game.

Holy Cross would hit a pair of free throws and NU used a 6-0 run with Kim Carr scoring three straight baskets to take a 16-8 lead, prompting a Crusader timeout.

Holy Cross stormed back to knot the game at 16 and took the lead on a Briana McFadden three-pointer to put the Crusaders up 19-16. Holy Cross held Northeastern without a field goal for 5:27 until a Wilson lay up stopped the scoring drought.

With Holy Cross leading 24-20, Wilson tipped in an offensive rebound to tie the game back up at 26 apiece, but Holy Cross would respond as McFadden layed it in to put the Crusaders back on top and stretched the lead to 31-28. A Kendra Walton three tied the game a 31-31, but Holy Cross drew two fouls in the remaining 39 seconds left and converted two of four free throws to give the Crusaders a 33-31 lead at halftime.

Wilson led Northeastern with 18 points at the half as the Huskies shot 39.3 percent from the floor. McFadden and Bethany O'Dell led Holy Cross with 11 each as the Crusaders shot just 32.3 percent from the field.

A pair of Wilson free throws tied the game at 33 to open the scoring in the second half. After a Whitney Fremeau lay up for Holy Cross, the Huskies Dani Iervolino nailed two straight three-pointers in a span of 17 seconds to give Northeastern a 39-35 lead.

After Holy Cross hit two straight to cut the lead to 41-40, Northeastern responded with a 6-0 run to give it a 47-40 advantage. Holy Cross then used a 7-0 run of its own, capped by an O'Dell three pointer to knot the score at 47-47 with 12:45 remaining as Northeastern called a timeout.

Wilson connected on a three at 11:28 to give NU the lead at 50-47. Carr then converted three-point play to give the Huskies a 53-47 lead, but O'Dell hit another three for Holy Cross to bring the margin back to three points at 53-50 with 10:45 remaining. However, Ierovlino one again came up with a timely three for Northeastern to put the Huskies back up 56-50.

With the score at 59-53, Holy Cross' McFadden converted a three-point play to put the Crusaders down two. An O'Dell jumper tied the game at 59 with 4:52 remaining. Northeastern retook the lead on a pair of Wilson free throws to go up 61-59.

Fremeau hit two free throws for Holy Cross get things even at 61-61. The Crusaders followed that up with a steal by O'Dell that led to to a lay up in transition, putting Holy Cross up 63-61. Wilson tied the score at 63 with a lay up and both teams failed to hit a field goal in the final 1:45 to force overtime.

Holy Cross' Amy Lepley scored the opening basket in overtime, but the Huskies responded as Kashaia Cannon hit a three to take the 66-65 lead. A pair of Wilson free throws gave Northeastern a 68-65 advantage. A Conroy lay up gave the Huskies a three-point lead at 70-67, but Fremeau once again hit a big shot for Holy Cross as she drained a three that tied the game at 70 with 2:04 remaining. The teams traded baskets to get the score to 74-all, but with 3.7 seconds left on the clock, Holy Cross could not convert sending the game into another overtime.

The Huskies opened the second overtime with two three pointers from Walton to give the Huskies a 80-76 advantage. Wilson would knock down two free throws and Conroy hit a hard lay up to give Northeastern an 84-76 lead. Holy Cross cut the lead to four, but Wilson found Carr wide open underneath as she put in the lay up to give the Huskies a six point edge. Conroy and Iervolino hit free throws to ice the win for Northeastern.

Wilson finished with 31 points and is the first 30 point performance since Shaleyse Smallwood scored 32 against Hofstra on February 10, 2008. Carr ended with 17 points and seven rebounds while Iervolino had 11 points, which ties a career-high. Walton and Conroy also added 11 for the Huskies who improve to 5-2 on the season.

O'Dell led Holy Cross with 22 points. Northeastern returns to action on Wednesday November 9 taking on cross-town rival Harvard at 7 p.m.
