It was a windy and chilly marathon Monday in Brookline, Mass. when the Huskies hosted the Rhode Island Rams but the Huskies were on fire on both ends of the field. Even though the Huskies scored 12 runs, it would prove to be irrelevant as JT Ross tossed a complete game one hitter to lead the Huskies to the 12-1 victory.
Rhode Island took an early run one-run lead in the top of the second inning. Jeff Cammmans hit a double down the left field line, the stole third base. With a runner on third Dan Haverstick grounded out but scored the runner. It would be the last time a URI batter would be on the base paths for the rest of the ball game.
JT Ross went the distance, a nine inning complete game one hitter to silence the Rams. Ross struck out a career high 12 batters and issued no walks.
"I felt good today. I was throwing strikes with a lot of my pitches, which was key. From the get go I was able to throw all my pitches over for strikes and I had real good defense behind me today." said JT Ross after the game.
For Northeastern it was the first nine-inning complete game since Ryan Quigley tossed nine against William & Mary May 10, 2008. JT Ross' one hit was the fewest allowed since Adam Ottavino's April 7, 2006 no hitter against James Madison.
"That was as good a pitching performance as I'll ever see or anyone will ever see. It was a lesson in how to throw strikes with all your pitches and get ahead. It was just a textbook performance, it was phenomenal." said head coach Neil McPhee.
As luck would have it the Huskies also put together a monstrous game with the bats scoring 12 runs and putting together 15 hits. James Donaldson was the stand out player for the Huskies with two home runs, a three run shot in the third and a two run homer in the eighth.
Ryan Maguire also had a huge game for the Huskies going 4-4 with three RBI and his first career home run, a two run blast in the fifth.
Jeff Dunlap, Davin Barry, and Mike Tamsin all chipped in with a RBI as well. Tamsin and Donaldson both scored three runs while Dunlap and Maguire scored a pair each.
With the victory the Huskies secured their eighth consecutive 20-win season and their 12th 20-win season in the last 13 seasons.
The next Northeastern game will be Friday when the Huskies resume CAA play hosting Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m.
