Northeastern women's rowing came in fifth out of 30 crews in the Championship Eights at the 46th Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday, October 24. Princeton University, second in the Riverside leg before winning the Weld and Cambridge legs, took the race with an overall adjusted time of 15:48.314.
"I am really proud of how hard our athletes have worked since last spring," head coach
Joe Wilhelm said. "It is the first major race of the year, so it is difficult to read too much into it, but it does show that we are in some very fast company right now. We just need to stay on task through the winter, and we'll be ready to compete with the best teams in the country next spring."
Clocking in at 16:12.171, the Huskies performed well amidst stiff competition; all nine collegiate crews in the top ten featured in last year's NCAA championship. Vesper Boat Club, one of two non-collegiate crews, placed sixth.
The University of Virginia, defending NCAA team champions, placed second, while fourth place went to defending NCAA Varsity Eights champions Yale. Brown placed third as Northeastern rounded out the top five.
Northeastern B placed third out of five second varsity crews in the race, 26th overall, with a time of 17:24.844. Virginia B had the strongest second varsity showing, placing eighth in 16:21.977.
In other results, Northeastern placed twelfth out of 20 crews in the Championship Fours, posting a time of 18:54.212. Cornell set the pace in all three legs to win in 17:48.071.
Northeastern also placed twelfth out of 30 in the Club Eights, with an all-freshman crew finishing in 18:53.590.
In the Alumni Eights, Northeastern A came in twelfth, while Northeastern B finished 19th out of 32 crews.
The Huskies now set their sights on Princeton, NJ, where the Princeton Chase will be held October 30-31.
