Northeastern was outlasted by No. 22/24 Iowa, 87-59, at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Saturday, Nov. 20 in day one of the Hawkeye Challenge hosted by the University of Iowa.
Junior
Kashaia Cannon led the Huskies with a season-high 16 points, including a career-high four made three pointers. Cannon added three steals and three assists for Northeastern.
Sophomore
Afreyea Tolbert and junior
Jamie Conroy also scored in the double digits, registering 12 and 10 points, respectively. Tolbert grabbed seven boards for the Huskies while Conroy dished out a team-high seven assists.
Senior
Mia Mayberry led the Huskies with a career-high nine rebounds, while adding eight points and two blocks. Sophomore
Rachael Pecota added eight points for Northeastern.
Pecota puts the Huskies on the board with a layup to end a 5-0 Iowa run that opened the game. A three-point field goal from Tolbert on the next Huskies possession tied the score at 5-5 with just under 17 minutes left on the clock.
Iowa held a 13-10 lead at the second media timout taken at 11:55. The Huskies full court press forced the Hawkeyes to drain the shot clock bringing the ball up the court and not allowing Iowa to get the looks it wanted.
A field goal from Cannon following the break brought the Huskies within one at 13-12. The teams exchanged baskets on the next three possession. A Hawkeye foul on Megan Condine sent Conroy to the line, who made one of her two shots, bringing the score to 17-15 with just under 10 minutes to play.
A Morgan Johnson basket and a foul on Cannon allowed the Hawkeyes to convert a three-point play and earn a 20-15 lead.
A three from Kachine Alexander gave the Hawkeyes their largest lead of the half, 26-17, with 6:01 left on the clock. Following a timeout on the floor, Iowa opened its lead to 30-17 before a Conroy steal led to a three-pointer from senior

A jumper from Mayberry put the Huskies within eight, but Iowa responded with a Kamille Wahlin three-pointer just before the final media timeout at 3:32.
The Hawkeyes maintained their lead for the remainder of the half. Two three-pointers in the final minute from Cannon sent the Huskies to the locker room down 40-33.
A Mayberry putback off a missed Cannon layup put the Huskies on the board first in the second half, but a 7-2 run from the Hawkeyes pushed Iowa's lead out to 12, 47-35. Head coach Daynia La-Force Mann called for a timeout with 15:58 left on the clock.Northeastern scored first after the stoppage with a field goal, but the Hawkeyes responded on the next possession with a Morgan Johnson basket.
Iowa held a 51-39 lead at 11:52 when a timeout was called on the floor. A foul by junior
Dani Iervolino on a Alexander basket sent Alexander to the charity stripe after the break, where she converted a three-point play. Jamie Printy responded with a Hawkeye three-pointer, but Cannon notched a three-point field goal of her own on the Huskies next possession, bringing the score to 55-42.
Pecota tallied a basket from beyond the arc to halt a 4-0 Iowa run, bringing the score to 59-45. Iowa's Kelsey Cermak hit a three-pointer on the other end, but Cannon responded with her fourth basket from beyond the arc, making it 62-48.
The Hawkeyes embarked on an 14-7 run, running the clock down to under four minutes to play. The Huskies called for a timeout at 3:34. An Alexander putback pushed the score to 78-55 before Alexander committed a foul, sending Tolbert to the line, who was unable to capitalize on both opportunities.
The Hawkeyes held on to their lead and ultimately took the 87-59 decision.
Iowa shot 45.6 percent to the field, compared to Northeastern's 40.0 percent. The Hawkeye's also used their height to their advantage, outrebounding Northeastern, 51-27.
Northeastern moves to 0-3 (0-0 CAA) on the season after facing their first ranked opponent since playing No. 1 UConn in the 2009-10 season opener.
The Huskies return to the court for day two of the Hawkeye Challenge on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (CT) to face Northern Colorado.
