Huskies earn first win of season with 61-53 triumph over Northern Colorado

The Northeastern women's basketball team earned its first win of the season with a 61-53 triumph over Northern Colorado in the consolation game of the Hawkeye Tournament held Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

Senior Mia Mayberry notched the first double-double of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds, en route to being named to the Hawkeye Challenge All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Rachael Pecota led all scorers with 17 points. Pecota also contributed a team-high six steals.

Junior Dani Iervolino shot three-of-five from beyond the arc for a season-high nine points and classmate Kashaia Cannon added six points and three steals for the Huskies. Sophomore Afreyea Tolbert grabbed seven rebounds and added five points, while junior Jamie Conroy also tallied five points and dished out a team-high eight assists.

Northeastern got on the board first with a layup from Mayberry off a Conroy assist. Pecota had a layup of her own on the Huskies next possession to give Northeastern a 4-0 lead. The Huskies then capitalized on a Northearn Colorado turnover to extend their lead to 6-0 with another Mayberry layup.

The Bears posted their first points off a D'shara Strange jumper with just under 17 minutes to play. A Victoria Timm basket on the Bears' next possession made it 6-4 but Pecota answered with a three-pointer to put the Huskies ahead, 9-4, before a timeout on the floor at 15:45.

Iervolino notched her first three-pointer of the season to start a 5-0 Huskies run before the Bears called for a timeout at 13:44. A Mendenhall layup pushed the Huskies run to 7-0, but the Bears responded with a layup from Timm. A Mayberry jumper extended the Huskies lead to 18-6 with under 12 minutes to play.

The Bears struck first after the second media timeout and a Mayberry foul on Lauren Oosdyke gave Northern Colorado a chance for a three-point play. The Bears could not convert from the charity stripe but brought the score to within 10 at 18-8.

A Crews layup sparked a 4-0 Huskies run before Oosdkye put the Bears back on the board, making the score 22-10. Northern Colorado's Courtney Stoermer registered a layup on the Bears' next possession, forcing Northeastern to call for a timeout.

Northern Colorado went on a 4-0 run to bring the score to 22-16, but Northeastern responded with a Tolbert basket to push the Huskies lead back out to eight points. Cannon was sent to the line following a Bears' foul and the junior converted both of her opportunities to give the 10-point lead back to the Huskies. Timm responded immediately for Northern Colorado with a field goal on the Bears' next possession.

6-0 run by the Bears cut the Huskies lead to 26-22 but the Northeastern scored with less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock to take a 28-22 lead into the locker room.

The Bears struck first in the second half with an Oosdyke field goal, but Tolbert put Northeastern on the board during its next possession. Two consecutive baskets from Strange pulled the Bears within two at 30-28. A Kaisha Brown three-pointer at 16:24 gave Northern Colorado its first lead of the game, 31-30. Head coach Daynia La-Force Mann called for a timeout in attempt to halt the Bears' run.

Following the break, Conroy found a wide open Iervolino in the corner, who buried her second three-pointer of the afternoon to give the lead back to the Huskies, 33-31. Two free throws from Kim Lockridge after a Mayberry foul tied the game at 33-33 with 15 minutes to play.

Cannon recorded a pair of three throws to break the tie but a jumper from Strange tied the affair again, 35-35. Strange then hit another jumper, but Pecota retaliated with a field goal of her own to make it 38-37 Northeastern. Lockridge gave the lead back to the Bears with a layup, but Strange fouled Pecota on the ensuing possession, sending the sophomore to line to convert a three-point play. Northeastern retained possession after the foul due to a Bears' violation and Iervolino connected on her third three-point field goal, making it 44-39 Huskies.

Pecota scored on a fastbreak following the eight-minute media timeout and a Lockridge basket brought the Bears back within five at 46-41. Mayberry scored for the Huskies on their next possession. Tolbert then connected on the back end of a pair of free throws before La-Force Mann called for a timeout at 4:34 with the Huskies leading, 49-41.

A Northeastern foul sent Stoermer to the line, ending a 4-0 Huskies run. The Bears grabbed the rebound and scored off a Strange field goal, bringing the score to 53-45 with two minutes to play. Brown then hit her second three-pointer of the game to bring Northern Colorado within five with just over a minute and a half to play.

Northern Colorado sent Conroy to the line, who converted on the front end of her two chances. Another foul from the Bears put Mayberry at the line, who also hit the first of her two opportunities, making the score 55-48, Huskies. Two more free throws from Mayberry put the Huskies ahead by nine but a Timm field goal put the score at 57-50 with 44 seconds left on the clock.

Despite a late three-pointer from Brown, the Huskies held their lead and earned their first victory of the season, defeating Northern Colorado, 61-53. It was the first-ever game played between Northeastern and Northern Colorado.

Northern Colorado edged Northeastern in shooting percentage (38.6 percent to 35.7 percent) and rebounds (39-38) but 24 turnovers by the Bears led to 21 Husky points.

Northeastern returns from Iowa with a 1-3 record (0-0 CAA). The Huskies will enjoy a week off before heading to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army on Monday, Nov. 29. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
