Huskies drop 60-54 decision to Dartmouth

Northeastern was unable to complete its comeback against Dartmouth, as the Huskies dropped a 60-54 decision to the Big Green at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H. on Wednesday night. Northeastern managed to cut Dartmouth's lead to four points with 1:59 to play, but the Big Green held on for the victory. The Huskies fall to 2-4 on the season, while Dartmouth moves to 3-4.

Sophomore Rachael Pecota led the scoring effort for the Huskies, tallying 17 points while adding seven rebounds. Classmate Afreyea Tolbert scored a career-high 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for Northeastern while senior Tiffany Crews also posted a career-high in points (11) and led the team with eight rebounds.

Junior Jamie Conroy tallied seven points and tied with Tolbert for a team-high three assists. Fellow junior Kashaia Cannon got on the board with four points and two rebounds for Northeastern.

Dartmouth struck first with a Nicole Zimmer jumper after both teams went scorless for the first two minutes of action. Pecota posted the first points for the Huskies, draining a three from the corner before the Big Green rode a 5-0 run to the first media timeout, entering the break with a 9-3 lead.

The stoppage did not stop Dartmouth's mometum, as Faziah Steen hit a jumper from the top of the key on the Big Green's next possession. Dartmouth extended its lead to 18-3, holding the Huskies scoreless for more than a six minutes. Tolbert ended Northeastern's dryspell at 10:38 with a three-pointer, then took the ball to the hoop after a Conroy steal to cut Dartmouth's lead to 10 at 18-8. The Huskies employed their full-court press in attempt to slow the Big Green, but Dartmouth pushed its lead back out to 12 points, holding a 22-10 advantage with just under eight minutes left in the half.

Crews shot from beyond the arc shortened Dartmouth's lead to single digits and Cannon scored on a layup to make it 22-15, Dartmouth. Meghan McFee tallied a three-point field goal to halt the Huskies' run and Sasha Dosenko put Dartmouth back ahead by 12 at 5:23. Pecota posted a layup before Dartmouth called for a timeout at 4:49, holding a 27-17 advantage.

Northeastern used a 5-2 run to make it 29-22, but McFee put the Big Green back in front by 10, burying a shot from behind the arc with a minute and a half to play in the opening period. Zimmer nailed a shot from the top of the key for the Big Green while being fouled by Cannon. The freshman hit her bonus shot, sending the Huskies to the locker room trailing 35-23.

Pecota registered the first points for the Huskies after the break, connecting on a trey from the top of the key. Turnovers and missed opportunities plagued both teams, as a total of four points were scored before the official timeout at 15:57.

Another three-point field goal from Pecota ended a three-minute scoreless span. Dartmouth responded immediately with a layup from Brittney Smith, making it 38-29, before Northeastern took a timeout at 13:28. Dartmouth took a 5-3 run after the break to make it 43-32, sending the teams to the media timeout at 11:29.

Conroy connected from behind the arc, bringing Northeastern within 10, at 48-38, but a Smith layup on the ensuing Big Green possession allowed Dartmouth to regain a double-digit lead with just under eight minutes to play.

Crews sparked a 8-3 Huskies run to put Northeastern behind by six at 52-46, but Zimmer nailed a three for Dartmouth, taking the teams to a break at 2:47 with Dartmouth leading 55-46. Dartmouth converted the back end of a pair of free throws before Tolbert converted a three-point play at the other end. Another Dartmouth foul sent Pecota to the line and the forward made the first of her two shots. The Huskies grabbed the offensive rebound and a Crews jumper put Northeastern within four, 56-52, with 1:59 left on the clock.

Crews netted a pair of free throws, but Northeastern would fail to score again, as Dartmouth took the 60-54 decision.

Dartmouth shot 46.0 percent from the field (23-50) while Northeastern managed 32.8 percent (20-61). The Huskies were limited to a 26.7 clip from three-point range, as they connected on eight of their 30 attempts.

The Big Green won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Huskies 38-35. Both teams ended the game with 19 turnovers.

Northeastern returns to the hardwood on Monday, Dec. 6 when the Huskies host crosstown rival Boston University at Solomon Court. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. Fans can follow all the action via live video and live stats at GoNU.TV.
