Sophomore forward
Christine Huber recorded a double-double in her first game in a Huskies' uniform, yet Northeastern was unable to power past Miami (Ohio), as the RedHawks defeated the Huskies, 77-61, Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court.
Huber was eligible to suit up for Northeastern for the first time after transferring from Rutgers in the spring semester of the 2009-10 season. The 6'4 forward made her presence immediately felt for Northeastern, as she tallied 12 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. The North Babylon, N.Y. native also added two blocks, a steal and an assist in 10 minutes of action.
Junior
Jamie Conroy was the leading scorer for the Huskies, posting 13 points while contributing a team-high four assists. The guard also added three steals to her stat line. Classmate
Kashaia Cannon posted 11 points for Northeastern and a team-best four steals.
Sophomore
Afreyea Tolbert rounded out the double-digit scorers for Northeastern with 10 points. The Teaneck, N.J. native added four rebounds, two steals and two assists for the Huskies.
Freshman
Jewel Tunstull scored a season-high nine points in 15 minutes of action off the bench while senior
Mia Mayberry added six points and six rebounds for Northeastern.
Rachael Hencke led the RedHawks with a game-high 18 points while Kirsten Olowinski chipped in 11 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Courtney Osborn (17 points), Hannah Robertston (15 points) and Maggie Boyer (12 points) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Miami (Ohio).
The RedHawks got on the board first with an Olowinski layup following the opening tip-off but a layup from Mayberry evened the score at 2-2. Huber checked into the game at 17:28 and drilled a three-point field goal from the top of the arc on the Huskies' ensuing possession to give Northeastern the lead.
Miami (Ohio) embarked on a 7-2 run to send the teams to the first media timeout at 14:51 with the RedHawks leading, 11-7. The RedHawks extended their lead after the break and held a 22-9 advantage with 12:44 left on the clock.
Conroy drove to the basket for a layup and Tolbert connected on a pair of free-throws to minimize Northeastern's deficit to nine points at the timeout called at 11:52. Tunstull posted the first points after the break with a layup but a three-point field goal from Hencke pushed the RedHawks lead back out to double-digits at 25-15.
The Huskies were able to come within five points of the RedHawks at 32-27 with 5:35 left in the half but the RedHawks would not back down and took a 43-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Northeastern struck first in the second half, as Huber intercepted a Miami (Ohio) pass and fed Conroy for a layup but a free throw and a RedHawks layup put Miami (Ohio) ahead by 15 at 46-31. Northeastern used a 8-0 run to bring the RedHawks lead down to 48-39 with just over 15 minutes left on the clock.
Turnovers and missed shots plagued both teams for the next several minutes before Miami (Ohio) regained a double-digit lead, 54-43, with 9:56 left to play. The RedHawks then utilized a 12-5 run to push their lead to 66-48 at the final timeout on the floor.
Northeastern was unable to overcome the RedHawks in the final minutes of the game, as Miami (Ohio) sealed the game with a 77-61 victory. Northeastern drops to 4-5 on the season while the RedHawks move to 7-3.
Miami (Ohio) outshot Northeastern, converting on 45.9 percent from the field compared to the Huskies' 36.5 percent. The RedHawks went 7-of-20 from the three point line and held Northeastern to just 3-of-25 from beyond the arc.
Miami held a slight advantage on the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds to the Huskies' 37. Northeastern's 19 turnovers led to 29 points for the RedHawks.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 21, for an afternoon battle with Holy Cross at Solomon Court. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
