The Northeastern women's track & field team kicked off the 2010-11 campaign with the 2nd annual Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational all day on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Saturday, Dec. 4.

Saturday's meet was named in honor and memory of the late Jay Carisella. Jay was a member of the Northeastern track team in 2007, though he tragically died in an automobile accident on Dec. 23, 2007.

Jay participated as a middle distance runner. He demonstrated outstanding character, led by example and always created a positive experience for all people he came in contact with.

A three-sport athlete in high school, Jay understood the value of athletics and education. Beyond the acclaim he received for his distance running, Jay's most valuable asset on the team was his character. Jay had a big heart as he dedicated much of his time to volunteer in the community.

The spirit of Jay Carisella and his presence as a dedicated student, athlete and friend will carry on as today marks the dedication of the 2nd annual Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational.

The Huskies ran away with three victories, overall, and 11 top three finishes in the season opener.

Senior Kristen Martin marveled for the Huskies as she blew by the field in the 3,000 meter run, winning the event in 10:20.26. Katie Barrett also finished in the top-10, running the race in 10:42.49, good enough for eighth place.

Junior Saleena Abdur-Rashed dominated the 55-meter hurdles, winning the event in 8.25 seconds, which was two-tenths faster than the next closest competitor. Abdur-Rashed missed out on ECAC qualifying in the opener by one-hundredth of a second.

In the weight throw, senior Althea Charles won the event with a throw of 18.13 meters, which was a full meter further than the second place finisher. The West Orange, N.J. native's measure stood as the third-best toss in indoor school history.

Charles also performed admirably in the shot put, placing second with a throw of 12.93 meters.

The 500-meter dash was a Husky-dominated affair, as three Northeastern runners finished in the top-five. Seniors Christi Gallagher (1:19.90) and Courtney Mortimer (1:20.40) finished second and fourth, respectively. Freshman Chelsea Hudson (1:20.06) came in third in her NU debut.

Sarah Trotman ran well in the 200-meter dash, as the junior finished second with a time of 26.11.

Freshman Georgia Pingue had an impressive debut as she finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.00 meters. She was the top freshman in the event.

Sophomore Jillena Decarteret also represented the underclassmen well with a second place finish in the pole fault. Decarteret completed the event with a mark of 3.65 meters. The East Templeton, Mass. native tied her mark for fifth-best in school history and met ECAC qualifying standards.

The Huskies as a team also performed well as the 'A' relay team finished second in the 4x400 meter event. Northeastern came across the finish line in 4:03.07.

Seri Gordon put together a fine run in the mile event. The senior finished with a time of 5:12.72, which was good for fourth place. Sophomore Laura Coyne finished the 1,000 meter run in 3:01.21, which placed her in third.

In the 400-meter dash, Nikki Cunha ran well in a very competitive race. She finished fifth with a time of 1:00.76.

The Huskies stay local and will compete at the Harvard Open next Saturday in Cambridge, Mass.
