VCU surged to a 5-1 lead after the first inning and never looked back, earning a 9-4 win over Northeastern and completing the three-game sweep in Richmond, Va. Brendan Stokes led NU on offense, batting 2-for-4 with his fourth double of the season. Northeastern drops to 6-8 (0-3 CAA) and have lost their fifth straight game.

Northeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Alan Pastyrnak got to second base by virtue of an error and later scored on another Ram error. However, VCU jumped on starter Kevin Ferguson in the bottom of the inning.

VCU got six hits, including a two-run home run, to take the 5-1 lead. The Rams added another run in the second to stretch the lead to 6-1.

Northeastern then had their most productive inning, scoring three in the top of the third. Pastyrnak and Tony DiCesare both hit RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly from Frank Compagnone got NU to just a 6-4 deficit.

The Rams pitchers held the Huskies scoreless for the final six frames, though, while adding on three runs of their own to take the game in a 9-4 decision. VCU had 15 hits to NU's eight.

Ferguson took the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) in two innings. JT Ross tossed the final six innings for NU, allowing just one earned run on six hits.

Jon Leroux, John Puttress and Ryan Maguire each added hits for NU. Matt Miller hit a single and scored in the Huskies' three-run inning.

The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, hosting cross-town rival Boston College for a 3:00 p.m. tilt at Friedman Diamond. Junior RHP Brandon McNelis (0-0, 2.57 ERA in seven innings) will start on the mound. It will be McNelis' third appearance this season. Live stats will be available at game time.
