Despite out-hitting BC by a 10-7 margin, the Huskies dropped a tough 5-4 decision at Friedman Diamond. Freshman
Chris Carmain threw 5-2/3 innings in relief, allowing just one hit, but the offense stranded eight runners on base and couldn't come up with a big clutch hit. Freshmen
Jon Leroux and
Logan Gillis each batted 2-for-3 to lead the Northeastern offense.
Carmain's fifth appearance this season was decidedly his best, relieving starter
Brandon McNelis in the fourth and shutting the Eagles down over the next 5-2/3 innings. He issued just four walks in addition to the one hit, and didn't allow any runs.
Jeff Dunlap, in his first start of the season, batted 2-for-4 out of the DH spot.
Also contributing to the NU offense was
Alan Pastyrnak (1-for-4, run),
Frank Compagnone (1-for-4, run),
Tony DiCesare (1-for-3, RBI) and
Brendan Stokes (1-for-4, run). All 10 of the Huskies' hits were singles.
BC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and held the lead the entire game. NU got one run in the bottom of the first on a Pastyrnak single, a steal of second base, and a DiCesare RBI single to right.
BC stretched the lead out to 4-1 in the top of the second, though, capitalizing on two hits and a ferocious error. Northeastern tallied another run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from
Matt Miller, and added another in the third inning on Leroux's RBI single to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Eagles.
BC tacked on their fifth and final run in the fourth inning before quietly submitting to Carmain's reign. NU mounted a rally in the eighth, but managed just one run to bring the score to 5-4. The Huskies went down 1-2-3 to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Northeastern turned two double plays, upping their total on the year to five. Catcher
Jon Leroux threw out three base runners, keeping the fleet-footed Eagles at bay.
Next up for NU is a three game set against CAA foe Hofstra. The weekend matchup will be a good opportunity for NU to get back on track after losing six games straight. Check back on GoNU.com for a starting rotation and all other baseball information.
