Starting pitcher
Les Williams threw six innings without giving up an earned run and striking out seven to lead the Huskies (4-2) to a 7-1 victory over Valparaiso (3-8) in Auburndale, Fla. Freshman third baseman
Logan Gillis batted 4-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored to pace Northeastern offensively.
Senior
Frank Compagnone was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and freshman
Kevin Ferguson made his offensive debut, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, including a game-busting two-RBI double in the eighth inning.
Williams started strong, throwing two innings of shutout ball. Valpo broke the scoreless tie in the third, however, when the leadoff hitter struck out but reached first when the ball scooted away from catcher
Jon Leroux. Valpo then used a sacrifice bunt and a single up the middle to get the run home.
Northeastern struck back in the top of the fifth. Gillis roped a double to left and ended up scoring on a throwing error from the third baseman two batters later to knot up the score, 1-1.
The Huskies really broke the game open the next inning.
Matt Miller singled (giving him a hit in every game so far this season) to lead off the inning, and moved to third on
Alan Pastyrnak's double down the line. Compagnone singled up the gut, scoring both runners and putting Northeastern ahead for good. Compagnone moved to third on a Gillis single, and scored on one of Ferguson's two hits.
Northeastern tacked on three runs in the top of the eighth. Compagnone singled,
Brendan Stokes walked and Gillis singled in the hole at shortstop to load the bases, setting the table for Ferguson's three-run double. Gillis scored when the throw from right field bounced away from the third baseman and into left field.
Reliever
Charly Bashara, who came into the game in the bottom of the seventh, shut down Valpo for three innings and picked up his first save of the season. Bashara faced the minimum nine batters and struck out four of them.
Northeastern turns around to play Bowling Green State. Start time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
