Frank Compagnone's three-run home run wasn't enough for the Huskies as Georgia State rolled to a 10-4 victory on Sunday afternoon. The win clinched the series for the Panthers, as their strong offense pounded out 12 hits while the Huskies' offense, aside from the home run, was anemic all afternoon.

The usually sturdy Andrew Leenhouts got lit up on the mound, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits while striking out only three. JT Ross allowed two runs in relief, and Kevin Ferguson threw a perfect eighth to halt the GSU bats.

The Huskies earned six hits on the day. David Gustafson batted 2-for-3 with a couple of singles and two runs while Tony DiCesare added a single and a run as well. John Puttress and Tucker Roeder, who shared catching duties, each earned a single.

GSU jumped out early, building a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Another run in the third made it 4-0 before NU could get on the board.

Gustafson led off the fourth with a hit by pitch, and he moved to second on a DiCesare single to left. Compagnone took advantage, plopping a first-pitch homer over the left field wall to make the game 4-3.

However, the Huskies managed just two baserunners in their next 15 at bats. Gustafson hit his first single to lead off the sixth and Logan Gillis drew a walk in the eighth.

Georgia State continued to pack on runs, scoring two runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. They chased Leenhouts after the sixth inning, just the third time this season he hasn't lasted seven or more in a conference game.

By the ninth inning, the Panthers were cruising with a 10-3 lead. NU tacked on a run in the ninth, but no rally could form. Gustafson led off with a single, and he moved to second on the next play when DiCesare was hit by a pitch. Consecutive fielder's choices scored Gustafson, and Roeder followed those with a single. But a popout ended the game, sealing the 10-4 loss for NU.

Of Georgia State's 12 hits, 10 were singles. A sixth-inning triple and a seventh-inning double were the only times a GSU batter went for extra bases. The Panthers stranded nine runners, while NU left three on base.

The Huskies take on Rhode Island on Wednesday in their last non-conference game of the season. They wrap up 2010 next weekend with a three-game series at Delaware. Check GoNU.com for more information.
