Brendan Stokes hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to pull NU within one, but he was stranded at first base, ending the game and the season for the Huskies on a 2-1 loss to Delaware in Newark, Del. on Sunday. Delaware's Brian Rorick won a pitchers duel as both hurlers went the distance.
Rorick allowed only one walk through the first five innings and allowed just seven baserunners on the day. NU's
Andrew Leenhouts was similarly strong, but surrendered two early runs to take the loss.
Leenhouts struck out four batters, but also walked four and allowed nine singles. Rorick was barely hittable, striking out 11.
Frank Compagnone celebrated his final game in a Husky uniform by hitting a ninth-inning triple and scoring the only run of the game. It was also the only extra-base hit of the afternoon for either team.
Matt Miller and
David Gustafson broke up the no-hitter with consecutive two-out singles in the sixth.
Devin Barry hit a single and drew the lone walk that Rorick issued.
Catcher
John Puttress was the only other Husky to reach base, taking first when he was hit by a stray pitch.
Leenhouts got into trouble early, allowing seven batters to reach base his first time through the Blue Hen order. He allowed one run in the second and another in the third, setting himself in a two-run hole of which his offense couldn't bail him out.
He settled down in the later innings, allowing three singles over the final four innings. The damage, though, had been done.
Stuck in a 2-0 rut in the top of the ninth inning, Compagnone smashed a one-out triple to right center. He came home on the next play when Stokes hit a single up the middle. However, pinch hitter
Jon Leroux struck out and Puttress hit a fly ball to right field that ended the game, leaving Stokes on first.
The loss by NU completes the sweep for Delaware, which won on Friday and Saturday. This was the final game of 2010 for both squads. The Huskies finish with a record of 13-31 (5-19 CAA) and Delaware is done with a 27-24 (9-15 CAA) record.
Selections for conference awards will be announced mid-week. Leenhouts and pitcher
Les Williams are both in the running for pitching awards, and
Tony DiCesare is contending for an outfield spot on an All-Conference team.
