Huskies take top honor at CCSU Ted Owens Invite

Results

The Northeastern women's cross country team pulled together and won its first team event on Saturday afternoon, beating out nine other squads at the Ted Owens CCSU Invitational in New Britain, Conn.

Veterans Kristen Martin, Seri Gordon and Jessica Barton combined forces and turned in top 10 finishes to power the Huskies to their first victory of 2010. Martin directed NU's efforts for the second time this season, dominating the 5K test in third-place fashion of 18:26.00. Gordon followed closely behind with a clip of 18:35.00 for eighth while Barton posted a ninth-place effort of 18:38.00.

“The women impressed me today by getting out aggressively and really going out for the victory from the gun,” distance coach Renny Waldron said. “Seri (Gordon) finally had the great race that she is capable of. When she runs great like she did today, it helps the team tremendously.”

Senior Meegan Joly registered her best 5K of to date by finishing in 11th place with a mark of 18:45.00. Classmate Annie Scully offered up a 15th-place time of 18:58.00 while veteran Jillian Buck placed 21st with a time of 19:16.00.

Sophomore Karissa Mako rounded out the Huskies' controlling performance with a 43rd-place mark of 20:33.00.

Northeastern topped Rhode Island, Connecticut, Robert Morris, host Central Connecticut State, Hartford, Wagner, Fairleigh Dickinson, St. Francis College and Long Island University.

Martin's mark of 18:36.00 stands as the women's top 5K clip this fall.

The Huskies clicked at just the right time to build the momentum they were looking for heading into the New England Championship. Northeastern will take a weekend break before returning to its home trails to compete against the region's top talent. NU's distance squad looks to keep pace on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Franklin Park.
