Huskies get back on track with 72-48 win at GSU

Northeastern ended its two-game losing skid with a 72-48 victory over CAA foe Georgia State Thursday night at the GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, Ga. The win moves the Huskies to 7-10 (2-4 CAA) while Georgia State also stands at 7-10 (2-4 CAA).

The Huskies were led by sophomore Deanna Kerkhof who scored 16 points, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Wallaceburg, Ontario also pulled down five boards and blocked two shots while dishing out two assists. Classmate Afreyea Tolbert was second on the team with 12 points, going 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

Sophomore Christine Huber registered 10 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies in addition to two blocked shots. Fellow sophomore Rachael Pecota added 11 points for the Huskies and also grabbed seven boards. It was the sixth time this season the Huskies have had four players notch double-digit scoring performances.

Juniors Jamie Conroy and Kashaia Cannon both tallied eight points for the Huskies. Cannon dished out a team-high five assists and pulled down six rebounds while Conroy posted four assists and four rebounds.

Georgia State was led by Angelique Burtts, who scored 11 points while grabbing five rebounds for the Panthers. Chan Harris notched nine points and five rebounds and Tiffany Anderson posted eight points and seven rebounds for GSU.

Burtts started the scoring off for the Panthers before Huber countered with a layup of her own. A three-pointer from Kerkhof gave the Huskies their first lead of the night at 5-4, which they held until the first media timeout at 15:50. GSU took the lead following the break but Huber got it back for the Huskies with another layup. Two free throws from Anderson started a 4-0 run for the Panthers before Tolbert sunk a pair of free throws, making it a 10-9 game.

With the Panthers holding a 14-10 lead, Huber brought the Huskies within two with a short jumper. Kerkhof then drilled a three from the top of the key to give the Huskies a 15-14 advantage. Huber's put-back after her own miss pushed the margin to 17-14. Huber then fouled Harris, who went to the line to complete the three-point play for GSU to knot the score at 17-17 with under nine minutes to play in the half.

Freshman Jewel Tunstull checked into the game and made her presence immediately felt with a layup, but Burtts responded with a layup on the other end to keep the score tied. After a free throw from Tolbert, the Panthers regained the advantage with a 4-0 run. Sierra Mendenhall brought the Huskies within one at 23-20, before a shooting foul was called and Lanajia Ernest sunk two free throws for GSU. The Panthers stretched their run to 6-0 for a 29-22 lead with 3:13 left on the clock.

Kerkhof ended the drought for the Huskies with a jumper from the wing and Northeastern closed out the half with a jumper from Conroy to head to the locker room trailing 31-26.

Kerkhof started the scoring for the Huskies in the second half driving to the basket for a layup and Conroy tied the score at 31-31 with a three-pointer. A pair of free throws from Tolbert and a basket from Conroy gave the Huskies a 35-32 lead. The teams exchanged three-pointers and the Huskies took a 40-37 lead into the first timeout called for with 14:55 on the clock.

Both teams were held scoreless for over a minute and a half before Kerkhof sunk another shot from beyond the arc to extend the Huskies lead to six points. Burtts notched a fast-break layup but Cannon and Pecota hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Huskies their largest lead so far, 51-39, with 9:16 left to play.

A 4-0 spurt from the Panthers brought the margin back to single digits before Kerkhof's fourth three-pointer of the night gave the Huskies an 11-point advantage, at 54-43. Pecota tallied a three-pointer to extend the Huskies lead and two free throws from Cannon brought the score to 59-43 in favor of Northeastern with under seven minutes to play.

Pecota poured in another three-pointer for Northeastern to put the Huskies ahead by 20 points, 65-45, with 3:51 remaining in the game. The Panthers were unable to bring the deficit to under 20 for the remainder of the game and Northeastern snapped their two-game losing skid with a 72-48 win.

Northeastern shot 39.3 percent from the field (24-of-61) while the Panthers were held to a 32.3 percent mark. The Huskies converted 10-of-25 shots from beyond the arc for a 38.5 percent clip while the Panthers struggled from deep, going 1-for-10 for a 10.0 percent mark. Northeastern added 16 assists on the night, which tied the Huskies second-highest assist mark for the season.

The Huskies grabbed a season-high 50 rebounds for a +18 margin over the Panthers, who pulled down 32 boards.
