Four Huskies notched double-digit scoring performances, but UNC Wilmington earned a 85-68 victory over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court. The Huskies move to 7-11 (2-5 CAA) while UNC Wilmington improves to 14-4 (6-1 CAA).
Northeastern was led by sophomore
Deanna Kerkhof, who netted 16 points, while adding three rebounds and three steals to her stat line. The Wallaceburg, Ontario native notched her second-straight game as the leading scorer for Northeastern. Junior
Kashaia Cannon was the Huskies second leading scorer with 14 points in addition to four rebounds.
Sophomore
Rachael Pecota added 13 points and tied for the team high in rebounds with five boards. Junior
Jamie Conroy posted 12 points on the afternoon and a team-high seven assists. Freshman
Jewel Tunstull came off the bench to score six points for the Huskies, while sophomore
Christine Huber grabbed five rebounds and registered two blocks before fouling out of the game.
UNCW was led by Martha White, who nearly posted a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Mya Levels registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittany Blackwell (15 points) and Alisha Andrews (11 points) also scored in double-digits for the Seahawks.
UNCW got on the board first with a layup from Kristen Hanzer before Kerkhof got the Huskies first points of the afternoon with a three-pointer from the top of the key. The Seahawks used an 8-0 run to take a 10-3 lead into the first timeout called for at 15:56. UNCW extended its run following the break before the Huskies countered with a three from Pecota. After two UNCW baskets, Kerkhof notched a layup that was followed by a three from the Seahawks to earn a double-digit lead at 21-8.
Cannon tallied four consecutive points for the Huskies with a pair of free throws and a driving layup to bring Northeastern within 14 points, at 26-12. Both teams then struggled to score following the 12-minute media timeout, as Pecota posted the next basket for Northeastern at the 5:30 mark. Conroy followed with two free throws and Kerkhof notched a basket to bring the score to 37-18 in favor of the Seahawks.
Northeastern finished the half with a pair of jumpers from Conroy and a basket from Pecota to head to the locker room trailing 50-25. The Seahawks 50 first-half points were the most given up by Northeastern this season.
The second half began with Huber scoring a jumper from inside the paint before UNCW took its largest lead of the afternoon, 56-27, three minutes into the period. The Huskies used three-pointers from Cannon and Pecota to begin to chip away at the Seahawks lead, but Northeastern struggled to halt UNCW. Despite out-scoring the Seahawks 43-35 in the second half, the Huskies were unable to overcome the double-digit deficit.
Northeastern made its strongest run in the final minutes of the game, out-scoring UNCW 11-2 in the final three minutes, but the strong first-half from the Seahawks eliminated the chance for a Northastern comeback and UNCW left the gym with a 85-68 victory.
After shooting 27.3 percent in the half, Northeastern rallied to register a 46.7 percent mark in the second half to end the game with a 36.5 percent average. UNCW shot 56.3 percent on the afternoon.
The Seahawks won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Huskies 43-29. Northeastern forced the Seahawks into 18 turnovers while only giving the ball up on 13 occasions.
Northeastern remains in Boston for a Thursday night tilt with Towson. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Solomon Court
