Sophomore guard
Deanna Kerkhof not only led Northeastern with a team-best 15 points, but sank a pair of free throws with 0.4 seconds left as the game was tied at 56-56 to down Towson on Thursday night at Solomon Court.
Northeastern improves to 8-11 (3-5 CAA) on the season while Towson falls to 7-12 (1-7 CAA).
Kerkhof was the only Husky to score in double-figures for the evening while
Kashaia Cannon,
Christine Huber and
Jamie Conroy all chipped in nine points. Huber and Cannon each added five rebounds while Conroy dished out three assists. Senior
Mia Mayberry added eight points and five rebounds on the night.
Simona Petronyte led the Tigers with 15 points while Krystal Parnell added 12. Dovile Miliauskaite pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for Towson.
Towson started the scoring with a short jumper from Jalessa Dryver before
Dani Iervolino got the Huskies on the board with a three from the top of they key. Kerkhof scored her first points of the night as she drove to the basket, drawing the foul, but she was unable to complete the three-point-play and the Huskies entered the first media timeout trailing 6-5.
Conroy's layup following the break put the Huskies ahead but Petronyte hit a deep three-pointer for Towson to regain the lead. Trailing 12-9, Huber drove to the basket for a layup but Towson countered with a three-pointer from Charmonique Watt. Kerkhof managed to tie the score at 15-all before Krystin Fields pushed the Tigers lead back out to two points at a timeout taken at 7:56.
Huber notched another layup on the Huskies' first possession following the break then Iervolino hit her second three of the night to put Northeastern ahead 20-17. Towson knotted the score at 20-20 with a layup and a free throw. After both teams were held scoreless for over four minutes, Mayberry had a 6-0 run for the Huskies before Dryver hit a jumper for the Tigers to send the teams to the locker rooms with Northeastern leading 26-22.
Cannon started the scoring for the Huskies on their first possession of the second half. Mayberry extended the Huskies run to 4-0 before Towson called an early timeout at 17:58. Towson registered its first basket of the half just under the 16-minute mark.
Kerkhof and Cannon sank consecutive three-pointers to push Northeastern's lead to 37-28 with just over 12 minutes to play. Northeastern took its first double-digit lead of the night at 39-29. The Tigers began to chip away at the lead and brought the margin to within five before Conroy hit a jumper for Northeastern to make it 41-34, Huskies.
Conroy converted a three-point play to put the Huskies back on top by 10 points but Towson brought the Huskies lead down to four, 47-43, with under five minutes left on the clock. A pair of free throws brought the Tigers within two with three and a half minutes left on the clock.
Hubers jumper from inside the paint gave the Huskies a four-point cushion at 50-46. The North Babylon, N.Y. native followed with two free throws before Towson took the ball down the court for a basket, making the score 52-48 with 1:51 left to play.
Northeastern extended its lead to 56-48 with a Cannon jumper and two free throws from Conroy but then allowed the Tigers to tie the game with 26 seconds left on the clock. Northeastern held the ball for the final possession but could not convert. Kerkhof drove to the basket on the final ticks of the clock, missing the shot but drawing the foul with 0.4 seconds left in the game. The sophomore converted both opportunities from the charity stripe to seal the victory for the Huskies.
Northeastern shot 55.5 percent from the field (22-of-40) while limiting the Tigers to a 36.7 percent clip (18-of-49). Both teams struggled to convert from beyond the arc, with the Huskies managing a 36.4 percent mark and the Tigers shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range.
The Tigers won the battle on the boards, 29-27, while Northeastern committed 23 turnovers to the Tigers' 15.
