Late surge pushes Patriots past Huskies, 61-55

A late rally by the Patriots pushed George Mason past Northeastern, 61-55, on Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court. The Huskies conclude their three-game home stand with an 8-12 (3-6 CAA) mark while the Patriots evened their record to 10-10 (4-5 CAA).

Sophomore Deanna Kerkhof led the Huskies for the fourth-straight game with 19 points while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Classmate Christine Huber grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while adding nine points and two steals before fouling out with 2:04 remaining in the game. Junior Jamie Conroy paced Northeastern with nine points and a team-best five assists. Fellow junior Kashaia Cannon added eight points for the Huskies.

George Mason boasted four players notching double-digit scoring performances, with Taleia Moton leading the way with 17 points. Amber Easter added 13 points while Brittany Pointdexter and Brittany Eley both posted 10 points. Angelee LaTouche grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds for the Patriots.

Both teams started slow, as Pointdexter scored first for George Mason basket with 18:15 showing on the clock. After the score was knotted at 6-6, the Patriots rode a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half. Kerkhof went on a 5-0 run of her own before Huber notched two free throws to give the Huskies their first lead of the afternoon at 14-13. The lead was short-lived, as the Patriots battled to tie the game at 15-all before embarking on a 7-0 run to hold a 22-15 advantage with 3:58 remaining in the period. Northeastern rallied in the final minutes of the half and managed to bring the margin to within one point with a Conroy three-pointer, sending the teams to the locker rooms with George Mason leading 26-25.

The Huskies remained within striking distance of the Patriots to begin the second half but George Mason grabbed a six-point lead, 38-32, with just under 15 minutes left on the clock. Northeastern used a layup from Conroy and a three-pointer from Cannon, as well as a free throw from Tunstull to come within one, at 39-38. The Huskies then tied the game at 41-41 with a Conroy jumper at the 10:20 mark.

Northeastern earned its first lead of the second half with a three-pointer from Kerkhof to make the score 53-51 with 3:45 remaining. The Huskies pushed their lead to 55-51 with a layup from Kerkhof but would fail to score for the remaining of the game, as the Patriots scored 10 unanswered points to take the lead and claim the 61-55 victory.

The Huskies shot 40.0 percent from the field while the Patriots managed a 36.4 percent clip. George Mason won the rebounding battle, 42-30.

Northeastern heads to Newark, Del. next for a Thursday night match-up with the Blue Hens. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
