Huskies soar past Seahawks, 3-1

Box score

The Northeastern volleyball team improved to 11-0 all-time against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks with a 3-1 victory Friday night at Solomon Court. The Huskies move to 12-4 (2-2 CAA) on the season after the four-set battle (25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 25-17).

Sophomore outside hitter Janelle Tucker led a balanced Northeastern attack with 12 kills while also contributing six digs, three blocks and a service ace. Junior transfer Jasmine Marta posted her best game in a Huskies' uniform with 10 kills to go with three digs and a block.

Junior Nicole Bishop and sophomore Nichole Kurz both tallied nine kills, with Bishop adding a team-best seven blocks and Kurz recording four blocks, three digs and a pair of service aces.

Rookie Jillian Briner and sophomore Ina Kamenova both dished out 21 assists while Briner added eight kills, seven digs and two service aces. Senior Lauryn Ciszek chipped in six kills and four blocks and freshman Natalia Skiba led the Huskies with 18 digs.

The Huskies fell behind, 0-2, in the first set with a pair of errors but Northeastern quickly found its groove and tied the set at 5-5. A pair of Tucker kills and a slam from Bishop sent the Huskies on a 3-0 run but UNCW took control and knotted the score at 10-10.

The teams traded off the next eight points before the Huskies pulled away to a 20-15 lead. The Seahawks were able to pull within three points at 24-21 but an UNCW error gave the Huskies the win of the first set.

The second set of the night started as a back-and-forth affair as the two teams competed to an 8-8 tie. Northeastern was then only able to muster three of the next 10 points, as the Seahawks coasted to a 15-11 lead. Head coach Ken Nichols called for a timeout and then UNCW tallied another kill before the Huskies got back on the board courtesy of a Seahawks service error. UNCW tallied two of the next three points, forcing the Huskies into another timeout, trailing 19-12.

The teams traded errors following the stoppage. The next four points were split between the teams but the Seahawks closed out the set with a pair of kills and a block to grab the 25-16 victory.

Northeastern came out firing in the third set and the Huskies found themselves holding an early 11-4 advantage. UNCW notched six consecutive points to pull within one, 11-10, and then evened the score at 14-14 and again at 17-17. Yet, the Huskies were able to persevere and hold off the UNCW comeback, as Northeastern won eight of the final 10 points to record the 25-19 win.

With Northeastern holding a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set, the Huskies took the lead after a 4-4 tie and never looked back. The Northeastern advantage was as large as nine points, at 18-9, as UNCW called for a timeout. The Seahawks earned the first two points after the break and came within six, at 22-14. Northeastern closed out the set without allowing the Seahawks to complete their comeback, as the 25-17 win in the fourth set gave the Huskies the match victory.

Northeastern concludes its four-match home stand on Sunday, as the Huskies host the Georgia State Panthers. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Solomon Court.
