The Northeastern men's hockey team received five goals from five different scorers in the Huskies first road victory of the season, trouncing Providence on Friday night at Schneider Arena, 5-2.

Northeastern outshot its first opponent of the season, 26-21, to aid in the triumph. Junior Chris Rawlings stopped 19-of-21 Friars' shots while PC tried two goaltenders in net. Alex Beaudry got the start, surrendering two goals and Justin Gates came in relief and steered away 19 shots.

Special teams did not play a big factor in Friday night's decision as Northeastern went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Friars converted one of their two chances.

Juniors Steve Quailer and Drew Ellement, sophomores Zak Stone and Cody Ferriero along with rookie Ludwig Karlsson acted as the Huskies' goal scorers.  Freshman Dan Cornell earned his first-career point with an assist in the victory. Quailer notched his first multi-point outing of the year while Ellement attained his first career two-point performance.

The Huskies set the tempo right from the start, establishing a transition game two minutes into the contest. Off a faceoff deep in Northeastern's zone, Quailer blocked a shot from atop the zone and raced through the neutral zone with two Friars in pursuit.

With a couple feet of separation, Quailer unleashed his lethal slap shop from the left circle in stride. Beaudry was in position, but the puck had too much zip on it and found the back of the net just 1:26 into the contest for the early 1-0 Huskies' lead.

Providence possessed in NU's territory and the Huskies nearly scored in similary fashion after rookie Joe Manno blocked another shot at the blue line. Manno bounced the disc off of Beaudry's chest 15 feet out and Karlsson swooped in and almost potted the carom. Beaudry covered up the puck to keep it 1-0, but the Huskies capitalized in transition two minutes later.

After a couple exchanges, Stone made it count with a perfectly-placed wrist shot from high within Providence's zone at 6:59. Eibler generated the play and shuffled the puck out to Manson at the red line. Manson spotted Stone, pushed the puck up and Stone buried the 50-foot wrister for the 2-0 edge.

Myles Harvey put the Huskies on a power play with an interference call at 9:34, and despite great cycling and puck movement for Northeastern's extra-man unit, stellar positioning from Beaudry stopped NU from attacking on the power play.

The Huskies established an offensive presence in Friars' territory, but PC shifted the puck behind Northeastern's net, forcing sophomore Luke Eibler into the penalty box with a cross-check at 15:20.

In the first minute of the power play, Providence was not able to target the net, but at 17:05, Ross Mauermann set up Daniel New with a perfect pass in between the circles to cut into Northeastern's lead, 2-1, with the power play goal. New smashed the one-timer through heavy traffic as Rawlings did not get a good view of the shot.

The second stanza started 4-on-4 after Ferriero and Barrett Kaib went off for roughing at 1:55. Rawlings snuffed out the best chance with a point-blank save around the 3:00-minute mark.

Rawlings was not through showcasing his one-on-one skills in the second period. After Chris Rooney took a high-sticking call at 8:13, Quailer was forced to drag Tim Schaller down after he blocked a shot and went off the races. Quailer tripped up Schaller in front of the net, forcing the penalty shot at 8:47.

On the penalty shot attempt, Schaller made one move to his left side, came back, and blasted a hard wrist shot from 20 feet dead-on in front of Rawlings. Rawlings kept his center of balance and zeroed in on the puck the entire time, gloving Schaller's attempt to nullify Providence's chance to tie the game.

Immediately following the penalty shot save, the Huskies had all the momentum and scored 42 seconds apart starting with Ferriero's tip in at 13:46. Centerman Braden Pimm won the draw out to Quailer on the near boards. Quailer spotted Ellement all alone atop the zone and slid the puck over to the defenseman. Ellement teed up the one-timer and fired it on net. Ferriero was in front of the net and perfectly positioned his stick to redirect the rubber past Gates to regain the two-goal edge, 3-1.

On the next possession, the Huskies won the draw and Cornell guided the puck back behind NU's net and zipped it out to Manno in the neutral zone. Manno maneuvered to the red line and dropped the puck off for Karlsson on the blue line. Karlsson eluded a pair of defenders and lasered a wrist shot low side past Gates for the 4-1 advantage at 14:28.

Junior Vinny Saponari nearly made it a 5-1 affair with a ringer off the right pipe at 1:45 of the third, but Mauermann closed the gap at 4:15 on a backhand shot between the circles. Rooney shifted the puck into Northeastern's zone and Maurermann quickly redirected it past Rawlings to cut the Huskies' lead to two, 4-2.

Northeastern maintained pressure to close out the third, forcing Leaman to pull Gates with 2:30 left in regulation. Providence possessed and had a couple chances in front, but Ellement took advantage of the unguarded cage and sent the disc the length of ice into the net for his first-career goal at 19:18 to seal the Huskies' 5-2 victory.

Northeastern returns to Matthews Arena tomorrow night for the first meeting of the season with Vermont. Game time is set for 8 p.m. due to a men's basketball game prior to the contest.
