Kerkhof nets 15 points, as NU falls short to GSU, 57-44

Sophomore Deanna Kerkhof led the Huskies with 15 points, as Northeastern fell short to Georiga State, 57-44, Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court. The Huskies fall to 8-20 (3-14 CAA) while the Panthers move to 11-17 (6-11 CAA) heading into the last week of the regular season.

Kerkhof's 15 points came from a 5-of-9 shooting performance from beyond the arc, as she was one of three Huskies to notch a double-digit performance. Junior Jamie Conroy added 14 points and four rebounds for Northeastern while sophomore Christine Huber netted 10 points. Kashaia Cannon added three points and four steals and freshmen Jewel Tunstull contributed two points and three steals.

Traci Haltiwanger led the Panthers with a game-high 17 points, while Angelique Burrts and Cody Paulk also reached double-digits for GSU with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Georgia State got on the board first with a pair of free throws from Burtts but Kerkhof gave the Huskies a lead with a three from the top of the arc. Jerlisa Taylor's jumper on the other end was quickly countered with a three-pointer from Conroy. GSU went on an 8-0 run sparked by a fast-break layup from Chan Harris to take a 13-9 lead with 11:52 left in the half.

The Panthers pushed their lead out to 21-9 before Conroy got the Huskies back on the board with a shot from beyond the arc. GSU responded with a jumper from the paint on the Panthers' next possession but Huber followed with a basket on the other end. Haltiwanger regained a double-digit lead for the Panthers with a three-pointer to bring the score to 26-14 with 6:69 showing on the clock.

Following a fast-break layup from Harris, Huber hit a jumper but the Panthers drove straight to the basket on their next drive. Paulk was fouled on the shot and converted the three-point play from the charity stripe. GSU continued its run with a steal and layup from Burtts to take a 33-17 lead with 1:47 left before intermission. The Huskies closed out the half with a pair of free throws from Conroy to go to the locker room trailing 33-19.

Burtts got the scoring started inthe second half with a layup before Kerkhof hit a three to get the Huskies on the board. The teams exchanged field goals and entered the first time out of the half with the Panthers holding on to a 37-25 lead. Kerkhof hit her fourth three of the afternoon after the timeout and Huber sunk a pair of shots from the charity stripe to put the Huskies within seven, 37-30.

Kerkhof's fifth three of the game kept the Huskies within six points and a free throw from Cannon brought the margin down to five, 39-34. Long extended GSU's lead with a three from the wing and Haltiwanger pushed the Panthers back out to a 10-point lead, 44-34, with 7:23 left in the game.

The Huskies brought the margin down to five points after a pair of free throws from Conroy with under five minutes to play and Cannon followed with a jumper to put the Huskies within three. Following a timeout, the Huskies stole the ball and Tunstull's layup brought the score to 44-43. Haltiwanger was then sent to the line, where she converted both opportunities to give the Panthers a three-point cushion. Paulk and Burtts combined for a 4-0 run to extend the Panthers' advantage, 50-43, with 1:49 remaining.

Huber hit the front end of two opportunities from the charity stripe to bring the Huskies within six but Paulk tallied a layup to keep the Panthers ahead. Huber then sent Paulk to the line, where she converted both shots to give the Panthers' a 10-point lead. The Huskies were unable to score again and GSU held on for a 57-44 victory.

Northeastern shot 32.5 percent from the floor (13-of-40) while the Panthers managed a 38.9 percent clip (21-of-54). The Huskies struggled from the charity stripe, hitting 11 of their 20 opportunities while GSU shot 78.6 percent from the foul line (11-of-14).

The Panthers held the advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Huskies, 44-23. GSU pulled down 17 offensive rebounds for 12 second-chance points while the Huskies only grabbed four boards on the offensive glass.

Northeastern concludes the regular season with a trip to Fairfax, Va. on Wednesday to face George Mason. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
