Huskies drop 52-37 decision at Delaware

Junior guard Dani Iervolino tallied a season-high 13 points, including four made three-pointers, as Northeastern suffered a 52-37 setback at Delaware on Thursday night. The Huskies move to 8-13 (3-7 CAA) on the season while the Blue Hens improved to 12-9 (5-5 CAA).

Senior Mia Mayberry added eight points and five rebounds for the Huskies while junior Jamie Conroy added seven points and seven rebounds. Senior Tiffany Crews led the team with eight rebounds while freshman Jewel Tunstull added five points for Northeastern.

Delaware was led by sophomore Elena Delle Donne who tallied a game-high 24 points while Lauren Carra also notched a double-digit scoring performance with 10 points for the Blue Hens.

Delle Donne started the scoring for the Blue Hens after winning the opening tip, which ignited a 10-0 run for Delaware to open the game. Mayberry got the Huskies on the board with a short jumper at the 15:59 mark. The Blue Hens then scored seven unanswered points before Northeastern notched its next point off a free throw from Tunstull, bringing the score to 17-3 in favor of Delaware at the media timeout called with 11:36 on the clock.

A pair of free throws from Jocelyn Bailey started a 5-0 run for the Blue Hens before Mayberry scored her second basket of the night. Sophomore Deanna Kerkhof then sunk a pair of shots from the charity stripe bringing the score to 22-7. Conroy drilled a three from the left wing and Iervolino followed with a three of her own to put the score at 28-13 with just under five minutes to play in the half.

Delle Donne went on a 5-0 run of her own with a pair of free throws and a three pointer before Iervolino hit her second three-pointer of the night. Delle Donne quickly countered with another three-pointer on the other end to send the teams to the locker rooms with Delaware leading 36-16.

Iervolino registered the first points of the second half for Northeastern and Conroy followed with a long jumper to bring the margin down to 19 points before Delle Donne put the Blue Hens back ahead by 20, at 41-21. Tunstull scored on a layup at the 16:10 mark before the Huskies were held scoreless until Mayberry hit a layup to bring the score to 47-25 with 10:01 remaining in the game.

Kerkhof drove to the basket as the shot clock was winding down to post two points for Northeastern and Tunstull and Conroy followed with consecutive layups to cut into the Blue Hens' lead, making it 47-31. After a Delaware bucket, Mayberry tallied another jumper for Northeastern before the Blue Hens took the ball down the court and quickly scored, sending the teams into the final media timeout at 3:57 with Delaware holding a 51-33 advantage.

Iervolino closed out the game for the Huskies with a free throw and her fourth three-pointer of the night, as Delaware clinched the 52-37 victory.

The Huskies struggled on the floor, managing a 27.5 shooting percentage (14-of-51), while Delaware converted 38.3 percent (18-of-47). The Huskies 19 turnovers led to 19 Blue Hens' points.

The Blue Hens held a slight advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Huskies 36-34.
