NU concludes regular season with 77-55 loss to Patriots

Northeastern opened the game with an 11-2 run, but the Huskies were unable maintain their lead, as they fell 77-55 to George Mason Wednesday night in Fairfax, Va. Northeastern concludes the regular season with an 8-21 (3-15 CAA) record while Mason ends with a 13-16 (7-11 CAA) mark.

Junior Jamie Conroy led the Huskies with 12 points and six assists, while sophomore Deanna Kerkhof added 11 points and five assists. Freshman Jewel Tunstull netted a career-high 11 points while pulling down six rebounds. Sophomore Christine Huber added eight points and six boards for Northeastern while senior Mia Mayberry added six points and three rebounds.

Ten different Patriots scored for George Mason with Christine Weithman posting a game-high 21 points. Ashleigh Braxton was the only other player to register a double-digit scoring performance with 12 points.

Brittany Pointdexter got the Patriots on the board first with a jumper on Mason's opening possession before Mayberry responded for the Huskies on their first trip down the court with a layup. A Patriots' turnover led to a layup for Kerkhof and the Huskies embarked on a 11-0 run through the first four minutes to take an 11-2 lead into a timeout called at 15:51.

Pointdexter ended the scoring drought for the Patriots with a jumper from the top of the key out of the timeout. Amber Easter followed with a put-back layup before Conroy got her first points of the game with a driving layup. Weithman brought the Patriots within one with two consecutive baskets but Dani Iervolino responded on the other end with a three from the wing, bringing the score to 16-12.

Weithman hit a trio of free throws after being fouled from beyond the arc to close the gap to one-point but Kerhof pushed the Huskies lead to three with a shot from the top of the key. The lead was short-lived, as Braxton knotted the game at 18-all with a trey at the 7:28 mark of the half.

The Patriots took their first lead since their 2-0 start with a pair of free throws from Easter. Braxton extended Mason's lead, and 7-0 run, with a three from the wing, forcing Northeastern to call for a timeout with 5:38 left on the clock. Tunstull got her first points of the night out of the break but Taleia Moton kept the Patriots on top by six with a three from the far wing. Mason registered 10 unanswered points before Conroy got a floater to drop to bring the Huskies within 11 points at 33-22. The Patriots closed out the half on a 6-0 run to send the teams to the locker rooms with Northeastern trailing 38-22.

Braxton opened the second half with a three for Mason and Mayberry followed with a basket for Northeastern. Huber answered a 4-0 Patriots' run with a pair of shots from the charity stripe but Angelee LaTouche gave Mason a 21-point lead, 47-26. Conroy notched a basket to send the Huskies into the first timeout of the half down 47-28 with 15:24 on the clock.

Tunstull and Cannon registered baskets for the Huskies but Braxton extinguished the Huskies' momentum with a three from the far wing to maintain the 20-point lead, 52-32. Mason then hit back-to-back three pointers after a pair of free throws from Cannon.

The Patriots' took their largest lead of the night, 69-34, after a three-point play from LaTouche with 9:04 left on the clock. Northeastern out-scored Mason 21-8 in the remainder of the game, but the Patriots came away with the 77-55 victory.

Northeastern ended the game shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (22-of-44) while Mason posted a 49.1 field goal percentage (27-of-55). The Huskies struggled from deep, converting on just 5-of-12 chances, while the Patriots went 10-of-18 from beyond the arc (55.6 percent).

Mason held the advantage on the boards, 27-24, and had 14 turnovers compared to Northeastern's 23.

The Huskies now turn their attention to the CAA Tournament, which will be held March 10-13 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. Northeastern enters the tournament as the 10th seed and will face seven-seeded Delaware in the first round. The Huskies and Blue Hens will tip-off at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 10.
