Barton shatters NU record at the Stanford Invitational

Results

Senior Jess Barton answered the call on Friday night at the Stanford Invitational, shattering the school record in the 5,000-meter run by almost nine seconds to capture 11th place in her section.

The Newton, Mass. native posted a time of 16:35.85, topping Brittany Moriarty's mark of 16:44.03, set on April 17, 2009.

Barton's record-breaking jaunt should qualify her for the first round of the NCAA Championship to be held on May 13-15 in Princeton, N.J.

In the field of 115 distance runners, Barton's time ranked 39th. The Stanford Invitational is heralded as one of the strongest distance fields in the entire country.

Classmate Seri Gordon took part in the 800-meter run on Saturday afternoon in a field of 82. Gordon placed fifth in her section with a time of 2:14.40. The senior's time beat out 64 other athletes and stands as the best outdoor time this season.

The Huskies next competition takes place in Mahwah, N.J. at the Ramapo Invitational on Saturday, April 2.
