Huskies head to Hempstead to take on Hofstra

Setting the Stage
Northeastern concludes a two-game road trip on Sunday when it battles the second-place Hofstra Pride in Hempstead, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

Last Time Out
The Huskies held an early lead but couldn't hold onto it, falling at Drexel 66-39. Deanna Kerkhof and Jamie Conroy paced the Huskies with 12 points and five rebounds apiece, while Christine Huber added seven boards. Drexel's Kamile Nacickaite and Tyler Hale led all scorers with 14 points each, while Hollie Mershon notched 13 points and six rebounds.  The 39 points for Northeastern marked its lowest offensive output of the season.

Previewing the Pride
Hofstra enters Sunday's match-up coming off their first conference loss of the season after James Madison upset the Pride on Thursday in Hempstead, 81-63. Preseason All-CAA selection Shante Evans led the Pride with 14 points, while Candace Bond had a team-high nine rebounds. Hofstra's 5-1 record in conference play has the Pride sitting at second in the CAA, and the Pride came in at 8th in the most recent Collegeinsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25. Hofstra also received votes in the most recent AP Top-25 poll. Evans averages a double double on the season, with 17.8 points and 10.2 rebounds a contest. Katelyn Loper is second in scoring at 13.3 points a game.

The Series
Sunday's game marks the 28th meeting between Northeastern and Hofstra. The rivalry goes back to the America East Conference, which the Pride and Huskies were both members of until Hofstra left for the CAA in 2001. The Huskies hold a 15-12 advantage in the series. Since Northeastern joined the CAA for the 2005-06 season, Hofstra has enjoyed an 8-4 edge in the series, including currently being on a three game winning streak. Northeastern last beat the Pride on Feb. 14, 2010 by a score of 56-52.

Last Meeting
Hofstra took an 80-61 over Northeastern on Feb. 17, 2011 in Boston. Kashaia Cannon led the Huskies in scoring with 19, while Deanna Kerkhof added 14 points. Jamie Conroy notched 11 points, five assists and a game-high five steals. Hofstra's Shante Evans scored a game-high 21 points and Katelyn Loper added 19. Jael Pena led the contest with seven rebounds.

New York State of Mind
Sunday's contest marks the final time senior captains Dani Iervolino and Jamie Conroy will play in their home state of New York. Conroy hails from Brooklyn, while Iervolino calls Manhasset home. Sophomore Jewel Tunstull (Brooklyn) and junior Christine Huber (North Babylon) also emanate from the Empire State. Northeastern's four players from New York gives them one more than Hofstra. Iervolino and Conroy have gone 3-5 in their careers playing in their home state, with wins at Hofstra, Army and Stony Brook, and losses at Hofstra, St. John's, Marist and Syracuse.

Dani from Deep
Senior captain Dani Iervolino is the only player in the CAA to knock down a three-pointer in every contest this season. Overall, her three-pointer streak is 19 games long, good for the 11th longest streak in the nation.

Long-Distance Connection
Northeastern and Old Dominion combined to knock down 21 three-pointers on Jan. 8, the most combined threes in a game since Nov. 22, 2011. On that day, the Huskies and cross-town rival BU combined to hit 27 long-balls. The Huskies are tops in the CAA this year with 119 triples, averaging a league-best 7.0 makes from beyond the arc per contest. Dani Iervolino leads the way with 37 threes, followed by junior Deanna Kerkhof (29) and freshman Genevieve Gaboriault (25).

Conference Leaders
Several Huskies rank in the top-twenty in statistical categories in the CAA. Jewel Tunstull ranks first in field-goal percentage (61.1%), fifth in offensive rebounds (61), 19th in scoring (12.0 ppg) and 12th in rebounds (6.9 rpg). Jamie Conroy is fifth in assists (4.1 apg), sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.1) and eighth in steals (33). Dani Iervolino is ninth in the league in three-point field goal percentage (34.6%), followed by Deanna Kerkhof in 10th (34.5%) and Genevieve Gaboriault in 12th (34.9%). Iervolino's 591 minutes are good for fifth in the conference, and Conroy's 542 are seventh. Christine Huber is sixth in blocks (24) and 19th in rebounding (5.6 rpg). Kerkhof is 16th in scoring (12.6 ppg) and fourth in free throw percentage (78.6%).
