STORRS, Conn. – Led by
Kendall Coyne's three-point night, the No. 7/7 Northeastern women's ice hockey team (6-1-1, 2-1-0) skated past UConn (2-7-1, 1-2-0) on Friday night at Freitas Ice Forum, 5-2.
The Huskies doubled up UConn in the shot department, 40-20, and scored a power play goal for the fourth straight game, going 1-of-2. Connecticut was 0-of-6 on the man advantage.
Chloe Desjardins made 18 saves in goal for NU, while Elaine Chuli made 35 stops.
Northeastern controlled the pace of play throughout the first period and outshot UConn 14-2, but could not sneak a shot past Chuli. Coyne has NU's best chance of the frame with three minutes left in the stanza when she wristed a shot off the left post.
Later in the period,
Casey Pickett slid a soft pass across to
Colleen Murphy streaking towards goal for a low shot on Chuli. At the other end of the ice, Desjardins handled her lone test of the frame off the stick of Snodgrass four minutes into the contest.
The Husky offense woke up in the second period as Northeastern peppered Chuli with another 14 shots on goal, but this time buried three to take a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes of play.
The first came 6:21 into the frame as
Rachel Llanes netted her fifth point in her last three games when she hammered home a rebound at the top of the crease off a shot from Coyne on the left side.
Connecticut would level the score at one apiece six minutes later, however, as Caitlin Hewes netted her third goal of the season when she took a feed from Kiana Nauheim and fired a low shot from the right side through traffic and past Desjardins for the score.
When UConn was whistled for an interference minor with 5:04 left in the period, Northeastern would respond as Coyne buried her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Following a clear from the UConn penalty killing unit, Coyne picked up a loose puck, deeked a defender on the right side and flung a backhand past Chuli for a 2-1 Husky lead.
NU gave itself a two-goal cushion just 42 seconds later as
Paige Savage got into the act with her second goal of the season, banging home a rebound on the doorstep off a shot from
Brittany Esposito.
Connecticut made it a one-goal game early in the third period as Leah Buress scored her first goal of the season as she got behind a NU defender, took a pass from Margaret Zimmer and beat Desjardins five-hole.
It was all Northeastern from there as the Huskies killed off back-to-back penalties before potting two goals in less than two minutes. The first came from
Katie MacSorley when she knocked in a loose puck off a blocked shot from
Chelsiea Goll. Coyne would added her second of the night with 1:46 left in regulation with a rocket past Chuli from the right side.
Northeastern and Connecticut will resume the series tomorrow afternoon as the teams square off at Matthews Arena, beginning at 3 p.m.
