Post-game comments (Daynia La-Force and A'lece Mark) | GoNUxstream game recap
BOSTON -- Sophomore
A'lece Mark (Springfield, Mass.) tied career-highs with 15 points and seven rebounds, and the staunch defense of Northeastern (3-2, 0-0 CAA) stifled Dartmouth (1-3, 0-0 Ivy) to just 25-percent shooting from the floor in an 80-45 triumph over the Big Green women's basketball team on Tuesday afternoon at Solomon Court in front of a crowd of 1,309.
Redshirt senior
Kashaia Cannon (Providence, R.I.) added 19 points of her own, including 7-of-10 shooting from the field, and senior
Deanna Kerkhof (Wallaceburg, Ontario) was the third Husky to reach double-digits, scoring 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting, all of which came from behind the arc.
Sophomore
Amencie Mercier (Pierrefonds, Quebec) stuffed the stat sheet with five points, five rebounds and a career-high seven assists. 11 Huskies scored in the victory, the first time they have had double digit scorers since Dec. 6, 2008 vs. Stony Brook.
Faziah Steen paced the Big Green with nine points, and Abbey Schmitt added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Dartmouth.
Northeastern has now won two straight at home, and has held three of its first five opponents to 50 points or less. NU out rebounded its opponent for the second straight game, holding a 40-28 edge on the glass. The Huskies connected on 54.9 percent of their field goals (28-51), including a blistering 13-20 (65.0%) clip from three-point range. Both marks are season-highs.
Northeastern started with a quick pace right from the tip, when Cannon stole Dartmouth's first possession, converting a three on the other end. Mark added two lay-ins of her own, but it was Kerkhof with the hot hand early, nailing down her first two threes before the first media timeout, giving the Huskies a quick 13-7 lead.
Following a Mercier steal, Kerkhof connected on two freebies from the line after drawing a foul down low. Freshman
Samantha DeFreese (Bergenfield, N.J.) then added her first points of the afternoon, keeping NU on a 6-1 run before the 12-minute mark.
Two minutes of scoreless action went by before Mercier hit a trey at the 9:00 mark. Dartmouth quickly followed with a Jordyn Turner layup at the other end, but Cannon drilled another Husky three in response, giving NU its largest lead of the day, 25-10, at the eight-minute mark.
NU went on another 6-0 run following the stop, before Dartmouth converted two from the charity stripe. The Huskies started to pull away into the final media timeout of the half, and after two more threes from Mark and Cannon, were up 35-12.
Freshman
Onia Webb (Bronx, N.Y.) eventually wrangled in her first-ever bucket at Northeastern with a nice layup, forcing another Dartmouth timeout with 2:35 remaining in the stanza. Webb's classmate,
Tiffany Montagne (Jackson, N.J.) got into the scoring mix as well as the clock wound down, hitting from range to give the Huskies a commanding 40-17 heading into the break.
Northeastern dominated the first half, on both ends of the court, holding Dartmouth to a staggering 4-28 from the floor, while converting 14-26 (8-13 from distance) on the other end.
Needing a spark, Dartmouth opened up the second half with two defensive stops and a three-pointer, but yet another Cannon three and layup put NU back into control and forced a Big Green timeout.
Jewel Tunstull (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added her fourth point of the game – she would finish with seven on the day – and Mark converted her second three of the afternoon, subsequently adding to Northeastern's 12-2 run to open the half.
Dartmouth halted the Husky run, however, not allowing a basket in nearly five minutes. But Northeastern collected 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to keep a 30-point lead much of the way. Following a Northeastern timeout, Cannon and Kerkhoff got things rolling again, extending the Huskies' lead to 35 points, the largest of the day.
Tanisha Hopewell (Upper Marlboro, Md.) was the second Husky to record her first points of the season with a sleek move under the rim. Classmates Webb and DeFreese added a few more buckets after La-Force sent in four freshmen and a sophomore in the closing minutes of the second half. It was Hopewell's final basket of the afternoon that pushed NU to the 80-point mark for the first time of the season, as the Huskies soundly defeated the Big Green, 80-45.
Up next, the Huskies travel south to New Jersey to face NJIT at 2 p.m. on Dec. 1.
