Northeastern finishes fourth at New Englands

Day 2
The Northeastern women's track & field team finished with an aggregate of 47 points at the 2012 New England Indoor Championship on Saturday powered by senior Saleena Abdur-Rashed's triumphant effort in the 60-meter hurdles.

The Huskies finished in fourth place at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center. The University of Connecticut won the team event with a total of 123 points, marking it seventh-straight New England crown.

Abdur-Rashed became NU's sixth-ever indoor hurdles champion, winning the event with a time of 8.58. The Bronx, N.Y. native became the Huskies' first winner since assistant coach Tramaine Shaw won the event in 2008.

Sophomore Georgia Pingue garnered six points for Northeastern with a third-place performance of 11.95m (39'2.5) in the triple jump while classmate Olivia Stevens posted a 14th-place combination of 11.13m (36'6.25) in the same event.

Continuing in the jumping events, senior Ida Cance placed ninth in the high jump with a ninth-place leap of1.60m (5'3).

Senior Sarah Trotman captured a pair of points for Northeastern with a time of 24.87 in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Monet Brathwaite crossed the 200-meter line in 25.08 for ninth place.

First-year sprinter Monet Brathwaite was the eight-place finisher in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 56.90. Sophomore Chelsea Hudson grabbed three points in the 500-meter dash with a sixth-place time of 1:16.56. Senior Christiana Gallagher helped out the Huskies with an eighth-place time of 2:16.82 in the 800-meter run.

In the relay events, the 4 x 400-meter squad finished 11th with a clip of 3:56.93 while the 4 x 800-meter quarter posted a time of 9:27.39.

Northeastern continues championship season in two weeks when the Huskies return to the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Saturday, March 3.

Day 1
Senior Nia Howard became Northeastern's fifth-ever New England Indoor long jump champion with a leap of 5.62m (18'5.25) on the first day of the 2012 New England Indoor Championship on Friday at BU's Track & Tennis Center.

The Boston native became the Huskies' first long jump champion since Consandria Walker (2010), marking the 10th time in Northeastern history a Husky came away with the crown. Rookie Jessica Dunnigan also competed in the long jump, finishing 17th with a mark of 5.06m (16'7.25).

Junior Jillena Decarteret finished as the runner-up in the pole vault competition, springing over 3.82m (12'6.25) while classmate Lauren Bennett posted an 11th-place performance of 3.37m (11'0.75).

Third-year thrower Julia Westover captured third place in the weight throw with a toss of 18.21 (59'9) while classmate Rachel Taback finished 12th with a throw of 15.46m (50'8.75).

The Huskies registered 10 qualifying marks on the first day of competition at Boston University, lead my senior Saleena Abdur-Rashed's run of 8.86 in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries. The Bronx, N.Y. native finished third, overall, in a field of 29.

Rookie Victoria Alexander qualified for tomorrow' 60-meter dash finals with a ninth-place run of 7.85 while sophomore Ashlee Pitts qualified with a 12th-place jaunt of 7.88 in a field of 31.

Northeastern blanketed the finals in the 200-meter dash with four qualifiers, including freshman Monet Brathwaite (25.11 – eight place), senior Sarah Trotman (25.11 – ninth place), Dunnigan (25.37 – 11th place) and Alexander (25.42 – 12th place). Pitts finished in 14th with a time of 25.45, missing out on the finals by two spots.

Brathwaite passed into the 400-meter dash finals with a 10th-place march of 57.50 while sophomore Chelsea Hudson turned in a fifth-place qualifying time of 1:17.34 in the 500-meter dash. Senior Christiana Gallagher was awarded a spot in tomorrow's 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.78 (ninth out of 30).

Seniors Courtney Mortimer and Meegan Joly finished 18th (3:00.57) and 16th (18:24.21), respectively, in the 1,000-meter run and 3,000-meter run.

Northeastern is in third place after the first day of competition at the New England Championship. The Huskies trail Sacred Heart by just four points as the Pioneers lead with 28 points.
