The Northeastern women's basketball team could not overcome an early deficit and fell to Drexel by a score of 63-41 on Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court.
With the loss, Northeastern falls to 4-18 and 2-9 in CAA play. Drexel moves above .500 to 11-10, with a 7-4 mark in league play.
Northeastern's 41 point output marked its second lowest offensive effort of the season. It was the second time this season Drexel, which sports a top-50 nationally ranked defense, held the Huskies to 41 points or fewer.
The Dragons got off to a hot start, scoring the contest's first six points before freshman
A'lece Mark rolled in a layup for the first Northeastern basket. Overall, Drexel opened up a 14-4 lead midway through the first half.
Sophomore
Jewel Tunstull scored the Huskies next six points to cut the lead back to single digits at 17-10. A 9-1 run by the Dragons pushed their lead to 13 before Tunstull connected again to make it 26-15 with five minutes left in the first half.
Following the final media timeout of the first half, Drexel hit a pair of threes to extend its lead to 17 before freshman
Genevieve Gaboriault banked home a triple for Northeastern. Another Drexel three sent the game to halftime with the Dragons leading 35-18.
Senior captain
Jamie Conroy got the first basket of the second half, driving hard to the bucket and hitting a layup. Another Tunstull basket cut the lead to 15, before the sophomore swatted a shot on the other end leading to a
Christine Huber lay-in. The Dragons pushed the lead back to 17 before Tunstull hit a pair of freebies to make the score 41-26 with 15 minutes to play.
A Gaboriault three midway through the final frame cut the Drexel lead to 14, but the Dragons went on a 9-1 run push the lead 22 before the third media timeout of the second half. The Huskies bounced the lead back under twenty a few times, but never generated a strong threat the rest of the way.
Tunstull led the Huskies in scoring with 12 points, while
A'lece Mark chipped in nine. Conroy scored three points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, also dishing out three assists. Kamile Nacickaite led all players in scoring and rebounding for Drexel, dropping 18 and pulling down 11 boards. Overall, only three players for both teams scored in double figures, with Fiona Flanagan adding ten for Drexel.
The Huskies next hit the road for the first of a two-game road swing when they travel to Fairfax, Va. to take on the George Mason Patriots on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
