The Georgia State Panthers (8-11) completed a 10-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring 11 runs in the final frame to shock Northeastern (8-5) and win 13-12 Friday night in Atlanta.
Freshman third baseman
Jason Vosler was the star of the night in the loss for the Huskies, going 3-5 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Starting pitcher
Andrew Leenhouts was in line to pick up the win after throwing six innings and allowing just four hits and two unearned runs with six strikeouts. The senior had to come out when the game was delayed due to lightning in the seventh. Leenhouts is now 3-0 on the season.
Justin Malone, who started for the Panthers, also tossed six innings, surrendering five runs on six hits.
The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Vosler hit the first of his two home runs. A solo shot, the long ball gave Northeastern a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies were able to add to their lead and break the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits to push the lead to 5-0. With two out and runners on first and second,
Rob Fonseca singled down the left field line, scoring
John Puttress. Vosler then crushed a three-run homer, his second long ball of the night, clearing the bases.
Georgia State cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Joey Wood doubled to right center, scoring two runs.
But Northeastern came right back in the top of the seventh, scoring three more runs to make it 8-2.
Oliver Hart reached on an error to get things going and after
Michael Foster and
Aaron Barbosa flied out, Puttress brought Hart around to score with a double down the right field line.
Matt Miller then hit an infield single, moving Puttress to third and
Jon Leroux doubled to center, scoring two more runs.
In the eighth, Vosler started the inning off with a double down the right field line.
Connor Lyons followed with a walk and
Oliver Hart moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt.
Michael Foster walked to load the bases and
Aaron Barbosa hit a two-run single through the right side.
John Puttress grounded out to second but brought Foster home for the eleventh Husky run of the night.
A short spurt of lightning delayed the game for just over 30 minutes, and
Sam Berg came in to relieve Leenhouts. The senior threw two more scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. In five appearances, Berg now has an ERA of 2.84.
Fonseca added a solo home run in the top of the ninth, making it 12-2 Northeastern.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers did the unthinkable, scoring 11 runs in their final frame to come back and get the win. Michael Murphy started the inning, allowing the first seven runs and was relieved by
Mike Hanlon, who inherited a bases loaded jam. Hanlon was charged with the final four runs on three hits, taking the loss for the Huskies.
T.J. Sullivan picked up the win for the Panthers, who improved their record to 8-11 on the season.
