In the series finale between Northeastern (9-6, 3-3) and Georgia State (9-12, 2-1) Sunday afternoon, the Huskies scored all of its 13 runs in the final three innings, defeating the Panthers 13-4 in Atlanta.
John Puttress and
Jon Leroux each had three hits and three RBIs to lead Northeastern while
Aaron Barbosa and
Oliver Hart each chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.
Junior
Kevin Ferguson picked up the win in his fourth start of the season for the Huskies, and came within an out from recording a complete game. He went eight and two-thirds, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts.
Ben Marshall took the loss for the Panthers, going six and a third innings and surrendering five runs on 10 hits.
After four and a half innings without any runs on the board, Georgia State broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring the first run of the game on a suicide squeeze play. With one out and Landon Bennett standing on third base, Roy Seltenrijch laid down the sacrifice bunt, bringing home Bennett and giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, the Huskies brought seven runs home, giving themselves a 7-1 lead.
Oliver Hart started things off with a one-out infield single to short and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. After an
Aaron Barbosa single up the middle,
John Puttress singled to center field, scoring Hart for Northeastern's first run of the game and moving Barbosa to third.
Matt Miller kept things going with another single, scoring Barbosa. Then
Jon Leroux hit the fourth straight single of the inning, bringing Puttress around to score. After a pitching change brought T.J. Sullivan to the mound to replace Marshall,
Jason Vosler flied out for the second out of the inning. The Panthers then ended Sullivan's day after just one batter to bring in Max Schmitz. However Schmitz wasn't as effective, walking
Rob Fonseca to load the bases and allowing a two-run single to right field from freshman
Alex McKeon, making it 5-1.
Connor Lyons brought two more runs around to score when he tripled to right center field and Northeastern was in front 7-1.
The Panthers scored two in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-3, but the Huskies came right back in the top of the eighth to score two of their own, increasing the lead to 9-3. Leroux hit a double down the left field line to score Barbosa who led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by Seltenrijch and Vosler hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Miller who had gotten on with a walk earlier in the inning.
Pinch hitter Alex Prescott hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for Georgia State to make it 9-4. But the offensive outburst continued for Northeastern in the ninth, as the Huskies scored four more runs
Ferguson got close to finishing off the complete game in the ninth, but when the Panthers loaded the bases with two outs the Huskies elected to bring in sophomore
Mike Hanlon. Hanlon got his first batter Williams to fly out to left, finishing the win off for Northeastern.
The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when Central Connecticut State comes to Friedman Diamond for a non-conference tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
