Box Score
Box Score

Northeastern (10-7) scored six runs in the third inning to get ahead early and held off Richmond (13-7), defeating the Spiders 15-10 in the first of a three-game series Friday in Virginia.

Jason Vosler hit a grand slam for his fourth home run of the season and Aaron Barbosa and Michael Foster each had three hits in the victory.

Andrew Leenhouts got credit for the win, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Freshman Nick Berger came on in the bottom of the eighth and got four straight outs to shut the door.

Richmond starter Jacob Mayers allowed 10 runs on 10 hits through six and one-third innings.

Matt Zink hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning off Leenhouts to give Richmond an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Northeastern broke through for six runs, four of which came on Jason Vosler's first career grand slam. With one out, Foster started things off with a single up the middle. Barbosa followed by legging out a triple, bringing home the Huskies first run of the afternoon. Then John Puttress walked, Matt Miller attempted to bring Barbosa home but the speedy right fielder was cut down at the plate for the second out of the inning.

After the play at the plate, Jon Leroux kept the inning alive, singling up the middle to load the bases. That set the stage for Vosler, who got ahold of one, blasting it to right center field. Freshman first baseman Rob Fonseca made it back-to-back jacks with a long ball to left center a few seconds later and the Huskies had themselves a 6-1 lead.

The Spiders got right back in the game in the bottom of the third with a home run of their own. Chris Cowell hit a three-run shot to left, cutting the Northeastern lead to 6-4. But Leenhouts settled down for NU, keeping the Spiders at bay and allowing the Huskies to extend the lead again.

Northeastern scored a total of nine runs on five hits in the seventh, giving themselves some breathing room with a 15-4 lead. Fonseca hit a two-run single, driving in Leroux and Miller and three batters later, Foster hit a double to center, scoring Connor Lyons and Fonseca. Leroux delivered the final blow of the inning, hitting an infield single to first base, which brought home both Miller and Puttress.

Richmond bounced back yet again, scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh highlighted by a three-run home run by Bryan Conway, to make it 15-10.

The Spiders threatened again in the eighth after Sam Berg walked the bases loaded, but Berger came in and struck out Mallory for the final out of the inning. In the ninth, Berger retired Richmond one-two-three to end the game and finish off the Huskies' victory.

Saturday's game time has been moved up to 1 p.m. and will feature a pitching matchup of Michael Foster and Zak Sterling.
