NU claims its spot on the podium in outdoor opener

The Northeastern women's track & field team opened up its outdoor home slate with a combined 12 podium finishes on Saturday at Solomon Outdoor Track in Dedham, Mass.

The Huskies racked up four victories and the same number of second and third-place finishes against local competition in cool climates.

Senior Saleena Abdur-Rashed took home the 100-meter dash crown with a jaunt of 12.50 while third-year pole vaulter Jillena Decarteret claimed victory by springing over 3.51m (11'6.25). Sophomore Georgia Pingue was the triple jumper winner after clearing 11.64m (38'2.25) while the Huskies' 'C' team won the 4 x 100-meter relay after combining for 48.12.

Sophomore Danielle Klein outran 12 others in the 5K for second place with a time of 18:31.08 while two Huskies were runners up in the field. In the triple jump, sophomore Olivia Stevens put together a combination of 11.23m (36'10.25) while junior Rachel Taback tossed for 42.53m (139'6) in the discus throw for second place. Northeastern's 'B' quartet joined forces for 49.53 in the 4 x 100-meter relay.

Seniors Christiana Gallagher and Courtney Mortimer combined for a pair of third-place showings in the 400-meter and 800-meter dashes, respectively, with marks of 59.92 and 2:20.35. Sophomore Kelly Benfey and Lauren Bennett tied for third in the pole vault after clearing 3.13m (10'3.25) while junior Julia Westover captured third in the hammer throw with a heave of 52.07m (170'10).

Senior Sarah Trotman and Howard closed out the 100-meter dash with fourth and sixth-place respective paces of 12.65 and 12.79. Howard anchored the 200-meter dash with six other Huskies by crossing with a team-best time of 26.54.

In the distance game, junior Katie Barrett and senior Meegan Joly crossed in fifth and sixth place with times of 37:58.83 and 38:24.82.

Closing out the field events, senior Ida Cance cleared 1.57m (5'1.75) for fifth place in the high jump while sophomore Ally Crooke and Abdur-Rashed finished fourth and fifth, in that order, with leaps of 5.05m (16'7) and 5.00m (16'5).

Northeastern departs for Jacksonville, Fla. next weekend to compete in the Best Western Invitational hosted by North Florida on March 30-31.
