Ferguson leads Huskies to 8-2 win over Spiders

Northeastern (11-7) got out in front early and cruised to victory Sunday afternoon over Richmond (13-8), defeating the Spiders 8-2 to sweep the shortened series.
 
John Puttress, Matt Miller, Jon Leroux and Michael Foster each had two hits in the win for the Huskies.
 
Kevin Ferguson continued his dominance this season, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing seven hits while striking out eight to get his fourth win.
 
Richmond starter Ryan Cook lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Zak Sterling came in for the fourth and helped out by going two and a third innings, surrenering just one run.
 
The Huskies came out of the gate with three consecutive hits to start a three-run first inning and take control of the game. Right fielder Aaron Barbosa led off the game with a double down the right field line and Puttress singled to center, moving Barbosa to third. Miller then hit an RBI double to left center, scoring Barbosa and moving Puttress to third.
 
Next, Leroux grounded one back to Cook on the mound, but Puttress was came home for the second run of the inning. After a walk to Jason Vosler, Rob Fonseca brought home Miller with a single to left field to make it 3-0.
 
The Huskies added to the lead in the second when Barbosa hit an RBI groundout to third, scoring Connor Lyons who walked to start the inning, making it 4-0.
 
With Ferguson crusing on the mound, Northeastern added a fifth run in the third inning when Vosler singled to center field, scoring Leroux from second, who had doubled to left center.
 
In the sixth, Barbosa drove home pinch runner Oliver Hart to push the Husky lead to 6-0. Hart stayed in the game at shortstop after running for freshman third baseman Alex McKeon, who walked to start the inning.
 
Freshman reliever Nick Berger replaced Ferguson in the eighth, and allowed two runs to the Spiders, but the Huskies scored two more in the ninth, making it 8-2.
 
Foster came on to pitch the ninth and held the Spiders scoreless in the final inning, finishing the game off for the Huskies.
 
Northeastern returns home to Friedman Diamond Tuesday afternoon to face Boston College in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
