Northeastern scored eight runs in the seventh inning and held on for its fourth consecutive victory, defeating St. Bonaventure, 9-6.
Mike Hanlon came on and got the win in relief, pitching two innings, while Eddie Gray took the loss for SBU.
Jon Leroux had three hits and an RBI in his first start of the year as a designated hitter and
John Puttress had two RBI on a double in the big seventh inning.
Kevin Ferguson made his second start of the season for Northeastern, going 6 innings and allowing two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
For the Bonnies, Eddie Gray took the loss, going seven innings and surrendering nine runs on 15 hits.
SBU took the early lead in the top of the first inning after an RBI infield single by Billy Urban and added two more runs on singles from Nick Brennen and Ryan Skellie to make it 3-0.
The Huskies cut into the lead in the bottom of the second when Leroux got on via an infield single and scored on a double by
Oliver Hart.
After Ferguson walked Mike Grieco to start the top of the third, freshman
Alex McKeon started a 5-4-3 double play, which ended the threat, but SBU got back-to-back singles from Skellie and Austin Ingraham to keep the inning going. Ferguson picked off Ingraham at first, but Skellie darted for home and after a close play was ruled safe at the plate to make it 4-1 Bonnies.
SBU held their lead until the bottom of the seventh when the Huskies exploded for eight runs. Puttress started things off by reaching on a throwing error by Urban. Hart then drew a four-pitch walk to move the catcher into scoring position. A wild pitch thrown by Gray advanced the runners to second and third.
Connor Lyons drew a walk and
Aaron Barbosa singled through the right side to plate Puttress and cut the lead to 4-2.
Michael Foster grounded out but got home Hart for the second run of the inning.
Matt Miller hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Lyons. Fonseca then singled in Foster, who was safe at the plate on a close play, to give the Huskies the lead 5-4.
McKeon walked to push Fonseca into scoring position and then Leroux singled to left, scoring Fonseca. Puttress cleared the bases with a two-run double to right center and then scored on a
Connor Lyons single to left field to make it 9-4.
Sophomore pitcher
Mike Hanlon came on to pitch in the seventh for NU and cruised through two innings until the ninth where he got into some trouble, loading the bases with no outs. Hanlon walked in a run to make it 9-5 before senior
Sam Berg came on in relief.
Berg got Brennen to fly out to left field which got another run home for the Bonnies, and forced Skellie to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. It was Berg's first career save.
Northeastern will look to add to its streak Tuesday afternoon when it plays Georgetown at 3 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
Michael Foster will make his first career start on the mound for the Huskies.
