Powered by 13 hits, VCU defeated Northeastern in the final game of the weekend series at Friedman Diamond Sunday, 10-3.
Rob Fonseca hit his fifth home run of the season and
Aaron Barbosa and
Jon Leroux each had RBI singles in the loss for Northeastern.
Kevin Ferguson took the loss, lasting five innings and allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
Heath Dwyer had a strong outing for the Rams, pitching eight innings and surrendering three runs on six hits to the Huskies.
The Huskies struck first, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the first.
John Puttress singled up the middle for the first Northeastern hit of the afternoon and
Matt Miller followed him up with a single through the left side. Next up, Leroux hit an RBI single to right center, scoring Puttress.
Taylor Buran led off the second inning with his third home run of the season to tie the game up at 1-1. Later in the inning, Vimael Machin scored on a passed ball to give VCU a 2-1 lead.
Northeastern tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Barbosa that scored
Connor Lyons, who had reached on a single to center field.
The Rams took the lead back in the third on a two-run single by Nick Abrahamson to make it 4-2.
VCU was able to stretch out its lead, scoring two runs in each of the next three innings to take control of the game.
Sean Lyons came on to pitch in the sixth allowed two runs on two hits.
Fonseca blasted his team leading fifth home run of the season to left field in the bottom of the seventh to cut the VCU lead to 10-3.
Sophomore
Mike Hanlon and freshman Matthew Goreham pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth and
Oliver Hart made his second appearance on the mound this season, facing the minimum in the ninth.
Northeastern is back in action on Tuesday when they head to Kingston to play Rhode Island in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
