The Northeastern men's hockey program distributed its postseason awards at its annual team banquet on Thursday evening at Matthews Arena.
Steve Quailer was proclaimed the Huskies' Most Valuable Player while freshman forward
Ludwig Karlsson was voted as the Ed Arrington Rookie of the Year.
Rob Rudnick and Bill Doherty of Huskies Radio acted as master of ceremonies and Jon Burke, two-year NU goaltender and Class of '73 was the guest speaker.
Quailer was presented with the MVP award after matching a career-best 25 points in a season that was highlighted by an astronomical 10-game point streak that spanned from Nov. 18, 2011 to Jan. 13, 2012. The Arvada, Colo., native accounted for 15 points (6-9-15) within the stretch. It's the longest career point streak of any Husky on the roster. In 105 career contests, Quailer tallied 63 points (21-42-63) in three seasons at Northeastern (redshirted 2009-10 season).
Karlsson won the Rookie of the Year award after earning a spot on the Pro Ambitions Hockey East All-Rookie Team. The Stockholm, Sweden led the Huskies' scoring efforts with 26 points this season and become Northeastern's first freshman to lead the team in scoring since the 2006-07 campaign (Chad Costello – 22 pts). Nationally speaking, Karlsson was the NCAA's 12th-most prolific scorer with 0.81 ppg.
The Northeastern University Hockey Veterans' Unsung Hero Award was presented to
Robbie Vrolyk. The Boylston, Mass. native underwent season-ending injury as a sophomore and returned to the club this season and provided some much-needed firepower on the third and fourth lines. Vrolyk finished the year with five goals and three assists.
Sophomore center
Braden Pimm collected the Manager's Award as Northeastern's most improved player for the 2011-12 season. The Fort St. John, B.C., native improved this year's season total 13 points clear of his freshman campaign. Pimm tied with junior
Garrett Vermeersch and Karlsson as the club's leading goal scorer (10) and totaled 22 points on the year. Pimm tied for third on the team with a +9 plus/minus rating.
Four-year forward,
Mike McLaughlin, Northeastern's captain and lone senior, merited the Donald H. McKenney Coach's Award for his resiliency and leadership this season. Despite having his senior season cut short, the Seaforth, Ont. native matched a career high with 15 points in 2011-12, totaling five goals and 10 assists. For his career, McLaughlin skated in 120 fixtures and logged 23 goals and 23 assists along the way. He tallied six power play goals, four game-winning goals, three short-handed markers and closed out with a shooting percentage of 11.1 (23-for-208) for his career.
In his first season wearing a Northeastern sweater, junior
Vinny Saponari was bestowed with the Huskies Radio Award recipient for most exciting player to watch. The Powder Springs, Ga., native scored the Huskies' fourth-most points (7-16-23) this season but accounted for both of Northeastern's overtime goals; including the walk-off tally against his former club, Boston University, in the final game of the season.
Karlsson won the 2011-12 Leading Scorer, becoming the first award winner since
Wade MacLeod had a three-year stranglehold on it from 2008-09 to 2010-11. Karlsson's 26 points were a team best while his three power play goals tied for second-best.
The Friends of NU Hockey Ferny Flaman award for dedication to Northeastern hockey was given to Chuck Marshall.
Sean Hathaway were this year's Justin Harriman 'DogHouse Super Fan' award winners while Karlsson was bestowed with the Chicken “Lou-ser” award. Junior
Garrett Vermeersch was voted “Fan Favorite” by Northeastern's Dog House.
Head coach
Jim Madigan announced the captain corps for the 2012-13 season. Saponari will be the captain for the 2012-13 season while Vrolyk and Karlsson will be the assistant captains.
The Northeastern men's hockey team finished with an overall record of 13-16-5 and a 9-14-4 total in Hockey East action under first year head coach.
