Northeastern (14-16, 4-10) kept it close, but couldn't muster a late-game comeback, falling to the George Mason Patriots (24-12, 10-7) Saturday afternoon in game two of this weekend's CAA series by a score of 7-5.
Freshman second baseman
Jason Vosler had three hits and four RBIs for the Huskies in the loss, including a three-run double in the fifth that cut the George Mason lead to just one. Vosler is now hitting .336 and leads the team with 33 RBIs.
Huskies' starter
Kevin Ferguson took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Ryan Pfaeffle started for Mason, also going five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits.
In the bottom of the first,
John Puttress hit an infield single with one out, but got caught trying to steal second.
Matt Miller kept the inning going with a single to left field, and
Jon Leroux came through with a double down the left field line to bring home the first run of the afternoon, giving NU a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Zack Helgeson walked to lead off the inning and after Anthony Montefusco struck out, Blaise Fernandez hit an infield single shortstop. Ferguson got Josh Leemhuis to fly out to right field, but Jake Leonardo doubled down the left field line to bring home the first run and Nick Allen hit a ground rule double to right field, plating two more. The inning ended when Ferguson got Chris Cook to fly out to left field.
George Mason struck again in the fifth inning, scoring two more runs to increase the lead to 5-1. Hegelson was in the middle of things with an RBI double down the left field line and Montefusco hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Brig Tison.
Jason Vosler got the Huskies back in the game in the bottom of the fifth with a bases clearing double that scored three runs to make the score 5-4.
Sophomore
Mike Hanlon came on to pitch the sixth and got himself in trouble, allowing two singles to put runners on second and third. But the Colts Neck, N.J. native got Cook to ground back to the mound and Tison grounded out to shortstop to end the inning without any damage.
In the seventh,
Sam Berg worked around another jam, allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly by Montefusco that scored Dan Schafferman, who had started the inning with a triple off Hanlon. Berg had men on first and second base before striking out both Leemhuis and Leonardo to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Puttress and Miller worked consecutive walks and Leroux grounded into a fielder's choice that moved Puttress to third. Vosler then singled through the left side, scoring Puttress and making the score 6-5 Mason.
The Patriots added another run off Berg in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Tison that scored Allen. Berg pitched three innings of relief, allowing just one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
The Huskies couldn't do anything against Chris O'Grady in the ninth as the closer notched his tenth save of the season, allowing just one walk in the scoreless inning to finish the game for George Mason.
The two teams will conclude the series with the rubber game tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
