Game 1 Recap
Northeastern (15-21, 5-14 CAA) completed a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Towson (20-23, 10-9 CAA) 5-4 in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Towson entered the inning leading 4-3, but the Huskies tied the game on a wild pitch and
Aaron Barbosa hit an infield single to down the third base line that scored pinch runner
Pete Castoldi from third with the winning run.
Senior starter
Andrew Leenhouts kept the Huskies in the game and was just an out away from a complete game, pitching eight and two-thirds innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.
Leenhouts earned a no-decision as it was senior reliever
Sam Berg who came on to record the final out in the ninth who picked up his first win of the season.
Towson starter Kyle Paul went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Leenhouts got off to a good start early, holding the Tigers scoreless through the first four innings.
Northeastern took the lead in the bottom of the third, getting three runs on the board. With one out,
Connor Lyons got things started with a single through the left side and Barbosa reached on an error by first baseman Brendan Butler. After
John Puttress flied out to right field for the second out of the inning,
Matt Miller singled up the middle, bringing Lyons around to score the first run of the game.
The Huskies increased the lead to 2-0 when Miller went to steal second and Barbosa broke for home, barely getting under the tag by Andrew Parker at the plate. Miller moved to third on the play and scored on a single through the left side by freshman third baseman
Rob Fonseca.
Towson got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth. Hunter Bennett drove the first run home on a fielder's choice and Mike Draper came home on a sacrifice fly by Butler.
The Tigers took the lead in the sixth when Parker and Kurt Wertz hit back-to-back solo home runs to make it 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Oliver Hart had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Tucker Roeder, but
Connor Lyons struck out and Barbosa grounded out to second to end the inning.
Leenhouts retired the first two batters to face him in the ninth, but allowed a walk to Pat Fitzgerald and NU elected to bring in Berg for relief. Fitzgerald stole second, but Berg got Butler to ground right back to him on the mound for the final out of the inning.
Towson reliever Chris Acker was dominant in his first two and two-thirds innings, but allowed the two-out rally that won the game for Northeastern.
After
Jason Vosler flied out to left field and
Jon Leroux struck out swinging, Acker walked
Oliver Hart and gave the Huskies some life. Hart advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third when
Tucker Roeder reached on an error by Bennett. Acker then gave
Connor Lyons a free pass to load the bases and Hart came around to score when the reliever threw a wild pitch. Barbosa ended the game with an infield single to third that scored Castoldi, who had come on to pinch run for Roeder.
It was the second time Northeastern has won on a walk-off this season as they defeated Boston College by scoring five runs in the ninth inning on March 27.
