Kevin Ferguson pitched a one-hit complete game shutout and faced the minimum in a 2-0 Huskies victory over Towson (20-25, 10-11 CAA) on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The junior hurler also struck out nine Tigers hitters. The only hit of the day came in the second inning when Kurt Wertz singled up the middle.
Offensively,
Aaron Barbosa,
Jason Vosler and
Jon Leroux each had two hits for Northeastern (17-21, 7-14 CAA), with Vosler driving in
Matt Miller in the sixth for the only RBI of the day.
Taylor Clarke got the start for the Tigers but pitched only three innings, despite being effective, only allowing three hits and keeping the Huskies off the board. Tyler Austin replaced Clarke in relief, throwing four innings and surrendering two runs on three hits.
The Huskies had a chance in the bottom of the second against Clarke after
Rob Fonseca hit a leadoff double and Leroux singled to move him to third, but
Tucker Roeder and
Oliver Hart struck out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
Through five innings, both teams had yet to score and the Huskies had left five men on base.
Northeastern finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when Miller and Fonseca drew back-to-back walks and Vosler hit a single through the right side to bring Miller around to score.
NU added to the lead in the seventh, scoring a run to increase the lead to 2-0. Barbosa got things started with a one-out single to left field and stole second to move into scoring position.
John Puttress moved Barbosa to third on a groundout to second base and after a walk to Miller, Barbosa came home on a wild pitch by Austin.
Paul Beers came in to pitch the eighth for the Tigers, and worked through some early trouble to get out of the inning unscathed. Leroux hit a one-out single through the left side and Roeder kept things going with a single to left of his own, but Hart struck out and
Connor Lyons grounded out to first base to end the inning.
Ferguson finished the game off with a perfect ninth inning, for his fifth win of the season. His season ERA is now 3.02 and he has 56 strikeouts on the year. With the win, Northeastern got its first CAA sweep of the season.
Northeastern will look to continue its hot play when they make the short trip to Boston College on Tuesday. Game time is at 3 p.m.
