A trio of top threes close out NU's regular season

The Northeastern men's track & field team had its final tune-up on Sunday, Apr. 29, at the Brown Springtime Invitational in Providence, R.I. The Huskies turned in a trio of top-three performances to close out NU's regular season.

Sophomore Alex Shapiro looped the track in the 400-meter dash for second place in 49.50 for his third-quickest time in that event this season. The Beacon, N.Y., native ousted 20 other sprinters on Sunday.

Senior captain Darius Velez offered up the Huskies' second podium performance on the oval, claiming third in the 100-meter dash at a clip of 10.97. The Cambridge, Mass., native's time was his best mark this season.

Veteran thrower Patrick Jablonski earned his fifth podium showing of the outdoor season with a third-place effort of 51.31m (168'4). Jablonski's toss was his third best this year.

In the hammer throw, sophomore James Hall finished ahead of 22 other competitors with a heave of 54.38m (178'5) for fifth place. Classmate Max Milder captured one spot behind Hall with a mark of 54.04m (177'3) for sixth while sophomore Conor Ebbs grabbed 17th after a throw of 39.02m (128'0).

Junior Dan Brooks turned in a season-best pitch of 53.01m (173'11) in the javelin throw for sixth place while sophomore Christopher Reider's mark of 50.65m (166'2) settled him in 12th.

Closing out the field events, Jablonski garnered eighth place in the shot put with a clearance of 15.38m (50'5.50) while Ebbs' mark of 13.30m (43'7.75) put him in 17th.

Freshman Sam Braen was NU's lone representative in the 200-meter dash, finishing 26th with a time of 24.44. In the 800-meter run, juniors Anthony Gentles (1:59.91) and Luke Malley (2:00.46) and rookie Andrew Rice (2:01.37), finished 21st, 26th and 30th, in that order. Junior Chris Mentas finished 23rd in the 1,500-meter run, crossing in 4:16.30 as sophomore Mike MacKenzie was on his heels in 24th with a time of 4:17.10.

The Huskies turn their focus to the postseason starting with the 2012 CAA Championship on Friday and Saturday, May 4-5. The event will be contested on the site of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
