Rams sink NU in rainy, extra-inning affair, 8-3

Box Score Box score

Sophomore Connor Lyons tied the game up, 3-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI double, but following a short rain delay, Rhode Island tallied five runs at the top of the 10th inning to sink Northeastern on Monday afternoon in the final home game of the season, 8-3. The Huskies closed out their non-conference slate with an even 10-10 mark. Northeastern slipped to 21-27 on the season.

Senior Greg Ferguson earned his first start of the season and went six and a third innings strong, striking out six Rams and scattered eight hits. The Wyckoff, N.J., native surrendered only three runs and walked just one. Junior Dylan Maki was dealt the loss after a tough outing following the rain delay, giving up four runs on three hits. Maki took over for senior Sam Berg who went two and two thirds innings and a pair of strikeouts. Rhode Island's Cole Warren picked up his first victory in relief after coming in to pitch the bottom of the eighth.

The Rams outdid Northeastern's bats, recording 13 hits to the Huskies' five. Junior Jon Leroux, rookie Jason Vosler and C. Lyons knocked in RBI for Northeastern.

Ferguson and Narodowy escaped the first inning without any damage before Rhode Island grabbed a on-run lead to start the second inning.

With one out, Pat Quinn roped one over senior Matt Miller's head in left field followed by a two-out single from Myles Diggins. With two men on, Joe Landi put one into righ center field to plate Quinn and the 1-0 advantage.

Leroux wasted no time sewing the game back up with a missle over the left field wall on a 1-0 pitch to make it a 1-1 game through two innings of play.

The Rams threatened at the top of the third, but Pat Fortunato went down swinging with Tim Caputo on third base. The Huskies capitalized and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double from the bat of Vosler. Leroux was issued a free pass on five pitches and four exchanges later, Vosler needled one down the right field line to bring Leroux across for a 2-1 Northeastern lead.

At the top of the fifth, Rhode Island recouped the lead with three doubles off of Ferguson. After Landi was retired on a line out to center field, Jeff Roy took second on a blast to right center. Two batters later, Jeff Cammans knocked Roy home to tie the contest, 2-2, on a two-bagger to center field. Kevin Stenhouse put the Rams ahead, 3-2, on the third double of the inning on a rope through left center field. Ferguson induced a groundout on Fortunato to prevent any more Rams' offense.

Northeastern answered Rhode Island's bats in the bottom of the seventh after C. Lyons mashed one over Greg Annarummo's head in right field for the RBI double. Sophomore Oliver Hart walked and junior Pete Castoldi pinch hit for senior Tucker Roeder with one out and a man on first base. Castoldi reached first base on a fielder's choice and with two outs and a full count, C. Lyons took Ty Sterner deep to right field to tie it up, 3-3.

Each club registered one hit, combined, in the eighth and ninth innings before a 20-minute rain delay halted play before extra innings took place.

Maki took to the mound once play resumed, but the Rams were keyed in and posted a five spot on the board to run away with the game.

With one out and two men on, Maki plunked Fortunato to load the bags. On a 1-1 count, Quinn popped one through the left side to trigger the rally as one run came across. Ty Muller pinch hit for Annarummo and carried out his duties with a two-run gapper up the middle. Joe Landi added another two-RBI single in the same spot to put Rhode Island ahead for good, 8-3. Hart was called in from shortstop to curb Rhody's offense and did just that, fanning Roy and forcing Caputo to ground out to third base.

C. Lyons walked to initiate the bottom of the 10th inning but the base runner was stranded to conclude the contest.

Northeastern closes out its regular-season slate with a pivotal three-game set at Delaware from Friday through Sunday, May 18-20. The Huskies' playoff hopes are still alive pending other results around the CAA. First pitch on Friday is at 3 p.m.
