The Hofstra Pride (28-18, 16-8 CAA) scored eight runs in the eighth inning on the way to a 15-9 win over Northeastern (18-25, 8-16 CAA) in the rubber game of a weekend series in Hempstead, N.Y. Sunday afternoon.

Huskies' junior catcher Jon Leroux led the way offensively in the loss, homering twice and driving in five runs. Sophomore outfielder Connor Lyons hit his first career home run in his only at bat, a pinch-hit, game-tying long ball in the top of the eighth.

Junior Kevin Ferguson made the start for Northeastern and allowed five runs on eight hits in five and a third innings pitched.

David Jesch started on the hill for the Pride and surrendered six runs on nine hits over four and two-thirds innings, but reliever Andrew Barbarino came on in the fifth and pitched two and a third scoreless frames to allow Hofstra to make its comeback.

The Huskies came out and took control of the game in the top of the first, scoring four runs on three hits off Jesch. Aaron Barbosa led off the game by working a walk and John Puttress singled through the left side, moving Barbosa to second with no outs. After Matt Miller flied out to left field, Jason Vosler hit an RBI single to right field, bringing Barbosa home for the first run of the game.

Next, Jon Leroux hit his first long ball of the day to left field, a three-run shot that quickly increased Northeastern's lead to 4-0.

The Pride fought back to chip away at the lead, putting two runs of their own on the board in the bottom of the first and added another in the second to cut the NU lead to 4-3.

Hofstra tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run by Taylor Stuart, but the Huskies scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead back. Miller started things off with a double to left field. Vosler popped out to first base and Leroux flied out to center before Rob Fonseca came through with a double to score Miller and Oliver Hart singled to center field, plating Fonseca and the Huskies had themselves a 6-4 lead.

That score held until the bottom of the sixth when the Pride scored three runs to take a 7-6 lead.

Connor Lyons gave the Huskies new life when he hit a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the eighth, but Hofstra responded with eight runs in the bottom of the inning to break the game open, leading 15-7.

Leroux hit his second home run of the day in the ninth to cut the lead to 15-9 before Hart and Fonseca hit back-to-back singles to keep the comeback hopes alive but Jason Roth hit into a double play that ended the game.

The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when the Maine Black Bears travel to Friedman Diamond for a non-conference game, which gets underway at 3 p.m.
