Three rowers called to national training camps

US Rowing's Sculling Camp Release

US Rowing's Sweep Camp Release

Three Northeastern men's rowers have earned invitations to train at U-23 National Team camps, to compete for a spot at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in July.

Senior Matthew Schanck and sophomore Justin Jones have punched their tickets to the United States camp, while sophomore Ryan Rosts looks to represent Team Canada at U-23 Worlds. The tournament takes place July 11-15 in Trakai, Lithuania.

Schanck, of Brownstown, Mich., is one of 19 athletes selected to the US National Team Sculling Camp in Norwalk, Conn. There, under coach Yan Vengerovskiy, he will make his case for a seat in one of the men's quadruple sculls competing in Lithuania. The camp may also select double sculls crews for the USRowing Under 23 National Team Trials, June 24-27 in West Windsor, N.J. The full team roster for Worlds is to be announced on July 1.

Jones, of Bellmawr, N.J., will make his way to Seattle to attend the sweep camp, headed by Luke McGee and Paul Cooke. Jones joins 22 other athletes hoping for a seat on either the men's eight or men's four in Lithuania. The camp may also select the men's four with coxswain competing at the National Team Trials in June.

Rosts, a native of St. Catherines, Ontario, will be a part of the Canadian sweep camp.

Together, Schanck, Jones and Rosts have delivered a sterling season for the Northeastern Varsity 8. After finishing ninth out of 34 teams at the Head of the Charles in October, the Varsity 8 won its first four duals of the season, including a win over Boston University on the Charles River for the Arlett Cup on April 7. The technically proficient Jones has set the pace all year as the stroke, while powerhouses Schanck and Rosts fuel the middle of the boat.

Men's rowing will next take to the water on May 13, at the EARC Sprints Championship in Worcester, Mass.
