BOSTON -- The Northeastern women's basketball team (9-6, 2-2 CAA) had its 10-game home winning streak snapped by the CAA's preseason favorite Delaware Blue Hens (12-3, 3-0 CAA) on Tuesday night at Solomon Court.
The streak ends as the second-longest in program history, one shy of the all-time record set between seasons from 1985-1986. It also marks NU's first loss this season at home, dropping them to 7-1 at Solomon Court. Delaware has now won 22 straight overall against the Huskies, and has also won 22 straight against CAA opponents.
Senior captain
Deanna Kerkhof (Wallaceburg, Ontario) led NU in scoring and rebounding in the loss, dropping 16 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Joining her in double figures was redshirt-senior and co-captain
Kashaia Cannon (Providence, R.I.), who tallied 14 points on 6-11 shooting.
Lauren Carra led the charge for the Blue Hens, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds, leading all players in both categories. All-American Elena Delle Donne chipped in 19 points and seven boards, going 10-11 from the free throw line.
Also getting on the scoresheet for NU was junior center
Jewel Tunstull (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who scored four points and grabbed five rebounds, while turning aside a career-high four blocks. Sophomore
A'lece Mark (Springfield, Mass.) scored seven points with three assists, three rebounds and two steals, and senior co-captain
Christine Huber (North Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore
Amencie Mercier (Pierrefonds, Quebec) each scored four.
The Huskies were held to 35.7 percent shooting from the field, connecting on 20 of 56 field goal attempts, while the Hens hit 40.6 percent of their shots (26-64). Delaware out rebounded NU 48-28, and reached the free throw line 23 times to NU's five. Northeastern recorded a season-high seven blocks in the loss, but notched the same amount of steals, its lowest total since Nov. 27.
The Blue Hens scored the game's first six points, before Tunstull ended the run and got the Huskies on the board with an offensive rebound put-back. UDel took a 9-4 lead into the game's first media break, but NU battled back to tie it at 14-all with a Kerkhof three at 12:30.
Delaware responded to the tie by rattling off seven straight, forcing an NU timeout at 10:29 of the first half. Huber ended what totaled an 8-0 run by the Hens with a jumper, before Mark connected on a triple at 7:30 to make it 24-19.
Kerkhof converted a three-point play with 5:28 to play to make it a four point game, but the Hens again responded to the surge, scoring the next ten points to push it to 14, their largest lead of the day. Cannon finally ended the run with a three at 1:34, but the Hens answered right back with a triple of their own, and Delaware took a 44-29 lead into the half.
Cannon led the Huskies with 10 points in the opening frame, while Carra had 15 for the Hens to lead all players. Delaware shot a blistering 14-26 from the field in the first half, including a 6-7 mark from beyond the arc.
Northeastern scored four of the first five points in the second half, getting within 12. The Hens then scored the next six before the half's first media timeout, going into the 15:49 break up 51-33. Delaware stretched its lead over 20 for the first time with a Delle Donne jumper at 13:24, and it stayed there for much of the rest of the way.
Northeastern next heads back to the road, when it travels to Atlanta for a CAA date with Georgia State on Thursday night. Tip-off at the GSU Sports Arena is set for 7 p.m.
