Four-goal performance at Harvard (
Cody Ferriero on Dec. 29)
Northeastern vs. Bentley
Bentley University makes the quick 20-minute drive to Matthews Arena for a Saturday night showdown for just the fourth time in program history. The Falcons, members of Atlantic Hockey, skated into Matthews Arena during the 2010-11 season and upset Northeastern in a 2-1 final on Oct. 30, 2010. Goaltender
Clay Witt also made his Northeastern debut in that game. The Huskies sunk the Falcons in the first two meetings of the series, winning on Nov. 8, 2008 (4-1) and Oct. 16, 2009 (3-2). Northeastern has not faced a team from Atlantic Hockey since the Huskies took on Niagara on Nov. 5, 2010. Saturday will be head coach
Jim Madigan's first contest going up against a team from that conference while Bentley's Ryan Soderquist, 2011-12 Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year, has been at the helm of Bentley's program since 2000.
Breaking down Bentley
Bentley rests comfortably within Atlantic Hockey's rankings, posting an even 5-5-1 mark in league play, but the Falcons are winless in their last five outings with a 0-4-1 mark. BU's 6-9-1 overall mark might be deceiving because the Falcons tout the nation's top scoring offense (3.69 gpg) anchored by the country's leading scorer in junior Brett Gensler. Gensler leads the NCAA with 1.69 points per game, including 11 goals and 16 assists. Gensler is also tied for second in assists (1.00) and fifth in goals per game (0.69) in all of college hockey. Alex Grieve is a force to be reckoned with on the power play, scoring five goals and is now tied for fourth in NCAA in PPGs per game. Grieve heads off the NCAA's third most potent power play attack, converting at a clip of 25 percent (15-for-60). Bentley's defense has been its downfall, ranking 54th overall (3.44 gpg) with a 51st-ranked penalty kill (77.4 percent).
Four for Ferriero
Junior
Cody Ferriero turned in a historic night for Northeastern in a 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29. The Essex, Mass., native scored four goals in all, including three power play tallies in the second period. Ferriero's four-goal outburst is the first in NU history since Ken Manchurek turned the trick on March 6, 1982 (vs. Boston University), a gap of
11,256 days or almost 31 years. Ferriero's incredible benchmark stands as just the third four-goal game in the NCAA for the 2012-13 season.
Hats off on the power play
Cody Ferriero's four-goal performance on Dec. 29 was highlighted by three consecutive power play tallies, all in the second period, in a span of 8:59. He is the first player in modern Northeastern history to score three-straight power play goals in a single period. The last time a Husky scored consecutive power play goals was when Wade MacLeod turned the trick in a 7-7 tie at Boston College on Feb. 18, 2011. Only one other skater in college hockey has scored three power play goals in a game (Minnesota State's Chase Grant vs. Alabama-Huntsville on Oct. 12, 2012).
Three the hard way
Cody Ferriero's three power play goal outburst was the first for Northeastern in almost 26 years. Dan McGillis scored three power play goals in a game on Jan. 27, 1996 against Brown. Ferriero's trifecta also came all in one period. The last time a Husky scored three goals in a period was Ryan Ginand on Nov. 4, 2005 against UNH.
Trick-eration
Cody Ferriero has now accounted for two hat tricks in his career, with his first taking place at Vermont on Jan. 27, 2012. Ryan Ginand is the last Husky to collect two hat tricks in a career. Ginand scored three goals in a game against UNH on Nov. 4, 2005 and against Providence on Jan. 24, 2009.
Take five
Freshman phenom
Kevin Roy tallied five points (1-4-5) in the Huskies' 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29, marking the first time a Northeastern player has scored five points in a game since both Mike Morris (2-4-6) and Jason Guerriero (2-3-5) turned the trick against Massachusetts on March 5, 2005. Roy's five-point performance stands as the NCAA's third occurrence up to this point in the season.
Help me help you
Kevin Roy became the first player to record four assists in a game since
Ludwig Karlsson in a 9-2 win at Notre Dame on Dec. 2, 2011. Roy assisted on all four of
Cody Ferriero's goals at Harvard on Dec. 29.
It's been an honor
Following their offensive explosion at Harvard on Dec. 29,
Cody Ferriero and
Kevin Roy were honored as the Hockey East Athletic Republic Co-Player of the Week and Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Jan. 2. Northeastern has gathered five Hockey East weekly awards this season, including Roy's Rookie of the Week and Northeastern's Team of the Week awards on Oct. 15 and
Bryan Mountain's Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 29.
Seeing red
Northeastern's 5-1 win over the Crimson on Dec. 29 marked the Huskies' first win in six trips to Harvard and its first since Jan. 12, 1978, when the Huskies won, 14-5. The game also marked NU's first journey to the Bright Hockey Center since Dec. 19, 1999.
Success after two
This season, NU is 6-0-0 when possessing the lead after two periods of play.
Playing catch-up
Northeastern surrendered the first goal in a 5-1 triumph at Harvard on Dec. 29, marking just the second time the Huskies recovered after giving up the first tally of the game. The first game in which NU gave up the first goal and won came against Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 11 (3-1).
Power play resurrection
Northeastern went 3-for-4 on the power play in a 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29, with all three goals coming from the stick of
Cody Ferriero. Before that game, the Huskies' power play was ranked eighth in Hockey East, but has since risen to third I the conference. Northeastern is now 11-for-66 (.167) with the extra man.
Roy-t more can you ask for?
Through 16 games,
Kevin Roy leads Hockey East in power play points. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native has tallied nine points (2-7-9) on the power play, averaging 0.56 power play points per game.
Rawlings rising in the rankings
Goaltender
Chris Rawlings has slowly ascended up the categorical rankings in Hockey East. The North Delta, B.C., native is second in save percentage (.929) and third in goals against average (2.23). Nationally speaking, Rawlings is in the top 25 in both save percentage (15th) and goals against average (23rd).
Machine Gunn
Freshman defenseman
Mike Gunn made his debut as a Husky on Dec. 29 at Harvard and assisted on
Cody Ferriero's fourth goal in his first-career game.
Elevating past 3,000
Through 108 career games played,
Chris Rawlings broke the 3,000-save plateau against Providence with 10 saves on Nov. 16. The North Delta, B.C., native is in third place all-time in career saves and needs just 31 more to eclipse Brad Thiessen's mark of 3,166 to move into second place. Bruce Racine (1984-88) is the school's leader with 3,557.
Roy-t a start
Rookie sensation
Kevin Roy posted his second two-goal outing of the season with a pair against Massachusetts on Dec. 1. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native leads Northeastern in points (18) and goals (8) and his multi-goal performance against UMass marked his fifth multi-point game of the season. Nationally speaking, Roy leads all freshmen in Hockey East scoring with 1.12 points per game. That figure ranks second across the entire country amongst first-year skaters. Roy's points per game average is tied for 25th in all of college hockey. His 0.50 goals and 0.62 assists per game are tied for 36th and 49th in the NCAA, respectively.
