PROVIDENCE – The Northeastern women's ice hockey team (4-4-0, 1-1-0) received two goals from Kelly Wallace and Chloe Desjardins made 30 saves to help the Huskies earn a split of the weekend series with Providence, downing the Friars on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena, 4-1.

Paige Savage and Lucie Povova also scored for the Huskies, who were outshot 31-17 in the game. Neither team could capitalize on its ample opportunities on the power play with NU going 0-of-8 and the Friars 0-of-6.

Despite being outshot 12-4 in the first period, it was the Huskies who walked away with the frame's lone goal to take a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play. Savage netted her third goal of the season with 8:47 left in the stanza when she received a pass from Chelsey Goldberg and rifled a shot past PC goaltender Sarah Bryant (14 saves) for the score.

Desjardins was tested throughout the frame, including during two Providence power plays, but the junior netminder stood her ground to steer aside all 12 shots she saw in the first.

The Friars would continue to hold the upper hand statistically into the second period, but still could not solve Desjardins. In the meantime, Northeastern potted its second goal of the night off the stick of Wallace with 11:35 left in the stanza with assists credited to Maggie Brennolt and Savage.

Desjardins made save after save into the third period, allowing just one goal on 12 shots she faced in the final 20 minutes. Providence cut the deficit in half with 5:21 left in regulation when Liv Halvorson netted her first goal of the season when she took a feed from Haley Frade to beat Desjardins.

Northeastern would strike back just 28 seconds later, however, when Lucie Povova hammered home her first goal of the season, taking a pass from Brennolt before beating Bryant for the score.

Providence would pull Bryant in favor of the extra skater when the Huskies were issued a two-minute minor for holding, but Wallace put the game out of reach when she registered an empty net goal to give NU a commanding three-goal lead late in the contest.

The Huskies will be back in action on Tuesday when Northeastern hosts Boston University at 7 p.m. from Matthews Arena.
