BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Northeastern women's hockey team received two goals from
Katie MacSorley to pick up a 2-1 victory on the road at Vermont on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
A trio of senior forwards led the way for the Huskies.
Katie MacSorley turned in her second two-goal performance of the season, bringing her to a team-best eight tallies.
Kelly Wallace had her third multi-point game of the season with two assists, while
Brittany Esposito chipped in a helper as well. MacSorley and Wallace are now tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece.
Junior goaltender
Chloe Desjardins had a strong game in net, turning aside 31 of 32 shots.
Northeastern got its first look on the power play after a holding call against Vermont 12 minutes in. Vermont got a 5-on-4 try three minutes later and nearly opened the scoring after a hard shot on
Chloe Desjardins. The NU netminder made the first stop and a scramble ensued at the head of the crease before the Northeastern defense was eventually able to chip the puck out of danger.
The Huskies got another chance on the man advantage late in the period, but the first 20 minutes expired with the game scoreless. Vermont took an 8-4 shots advantage into the intermission.
The game didn't stay scoreless for long though, as
Katie MacSorley netted her seventh goal of the season just 25 seconds into the second period. MacSorley fired a shot in close from the left side of the goal that trickled past UVM goalie Roxanne Douville.
Kelly Wallace and
Brittany Esposito picked up the assists.
Both teams were called for simultaneous infractions two minutes in and skated four-a-side for a full two minutes.
Northeastern capitalized on a missed opportunity for the Catamounts and took a 2-0 lead 6:30 into the period. After a big rebound, Desjardins slid back in time to stop a Vermont slap shot. NU grabbed the puck and darted up the ice in transition. MacSorley sped down the right side, broke to the net and fired a wrister past Douville for her second goal of the game. Wallace picked up her second helper of the night as well.
After another late-period stretch of 4-on-4, the Huskies took their new lead into the break, closing the gap in shots to 18-17 in favor of the Catamounts.
With both teams skating four-a-side for the third time of the night, UVM had a major scoring threat. On a two-on-one, Amanda Pelkey sent a pass across the slot to Victoria Andreakos, who was stoned by Desjardins with a sliding pad save.
Twelve minutes into the third, Vermont cut the Huskies lead in half on a 5-on-3 power play. First it seemed NU had caught a break when Vermont fired a slap shot wide of an open goal. Seconds later, however, the puck squirted out to Dayna Colang, who fed Pelkey near the left faceoff dot. Pelkey fired home a wrister, bringing the score to 2-1.
The Catamounts had a chance to even the score with two minutes to go as players on both sides fought for puck control in a scrum in front of the NU goal, but the Husky defenders were able to clear the puck away eventually.
Vermont will host a rematch against Northeastern tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
